Just by chance Joe, is that engine in a Craftsman lawn tractor?

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

I used to download manuals from B&S website...maybe you still can ??
BTW yours was made  Jan 24th 1996.
I've been told Vanguards are the 'top of the line', better bearings and such but a LOT of 'common' parts.

FYI the 'wires' connecting the coils to mag have  diodes inside the heat shrink. If one diode fails open, that cylinder will still run....

Joe, as good of a mechanic as your are, i doubt you even NEED a manual... I took a horizontal shaft motor 15 years ago and MODIFIED a couple parts to use it as a vertical shaft motor... I rebuilt it last week without a manual... Pretty basic.. When i had a question, i just looked at You Tube for some details.... ALL the vanguard engines will have the same pistons / cam / clearances / specs.... Usually they just changed the bore 1/8 inch to go from 16 -18-22 HP output.. You can adjust the governor to get 3000 - 3600 rpm max speed... really that is the ONLY difference in all the Vanguard engines.

Well, Steve,,Many Thanks for the vote of confidence,,,,Clap  Most times if I disassemble one, I do pay close attention and  I can assemble it OK, and,,,,,and,,,I usually do find a place for all the nuts and bolts with no left overs,,,,LOL I do like to have access to any wiring diagrams tho as some shade tree'ers do tend to cut wires during their troubleshooting,,,,,Wink
