Good morning, I have a AC D17 series 4 with power steering. My question concerns the governor/power steering pump/distributor assembly. The Manual says to fill this with oil to within 1-5/8" below top of housing through the plug on the distributor. Is the bottom of this hole 1-5/8" from the top of the housing? If not how do you tell when you have it filled to the right height?
     There is also a line coming from oil filter to the cylinder head and on to the governor housing. Does this allow oil to flow to the governor or is this just a vent?

You must have an old series D-17 that has been repainted to look like a series 4. The power steering pump on a series 4 is belt driven.Not like what you are describing. Anyway, make yourself a 3 inch long dipstick out of a piece of wire. Place it all the way down to the bottom of the cavity and retract it. The oil level is ideal at 1 5/8".  The governor assembly is supplied with engine oil and is sprayed into the governor cavity. It is NOT a vent.

That was my mistake. MY power steering pump is high on the left front of the engine and is belt driven. The only access to the governor/distributor housing is to remover the front governor plate or take the distributor shaft out. The only easy access is through the small filler hole.  I know on some AC there was a filler cap in front of the distributor but mine does not have that.  Thanks again for your help, Alan

So what are you asking about ??????? Engine oil is added by removing the right side hood and dumping in the oil thru the top of the valve cover ........Throw away the book you have as it isn't for a series 4 model and it is just confusing you.

I'm asking how to tell when the governor  housing is at 1 5/8. Are you saying to stick a wire down the same hole that you fill the housing with or is it not necessary to fill the housing because it is lubricated through the hose from the cylinder head?

If I didn't know better I would think I was talking to my dad. If I didn't understand what he was telling me he thought saying it louder would make it clearer. I jointed this forum looking for help, not to be ridiculed. I think I will look elsewhere.

Hey Bunky !!   You ain't reading and understanding anything at this point !!   A series 4 (if that is what it really is) doesn't even have a place to measure the 1 5/8" oil level for the distributor gears. Now, I suppose someone may have grafted old D-17 engine parts onto your series 4 engine, but unless I can see a picture of that area of the engine, I have to assume you have series 4 parts on a series 4 tractor. Good luck with your quest to get your questions answered to what makes you happy. You've been told the truth, if you indeed have a series 4 model with series 4 parts on it. A true series 4 D-17 governor/distributor gears need no oil checking or maintenance. The 1 5/8" oil level check does NOT apply.
