D17 fried a coil a few days ago. Died in the yard and didn’t deal with it until the next day because I thought it ran out of gas. Turns out the coil was dead. Replaced it with one I had in stock from another tractor. Today I was picking up bales. Half throttle type work. After 2 hrs the coil goes dead again. I grabbed it and it was warm but no where near hot. You could hold it in your hand.

What do I need to start looking at to cure this recurring problem ?

Thanks

Start by doing this:

Get a jumper wire, connect it from battery to coil power connection (bypass the ignition switch) and start it up.

Run it, and see if it eventually stalls.

If it doesn't, your failed coil is actually a failing RUN contact on the ignition switch.

They do fail... don't ask how I know...

Get a test light and see if it has voltage at both small terminals.  If it does now, run it till it dies and check again.

6V coils or 12v coils ??? What is battery voltage ?

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

12 volt coils. 12 volt battery.

i was just thinking out loud if the "NEW" coil could have been a 6V or needed an external resistor and you put it on the 12v.... and had too much voltage..

Could also just be a concidence that you have two "OLD" coils ?

Today it popped right off and ran a hour or so and the coil fizzled again. Put another coil on and kept going. Thinking it is probably all related to aged coils so far.

I don't think it's aged coils. It could be aged wiring or possibly a bad Ignition switch as Dave mentioned. D17's also used those useless Ballast resistors as well. If your D17 has one of them things hanging on it, get rid of it and put a new 12V/3.0 Ohm internal resisted Coil on it. But, before you do that, better check the wiring on board that thing. Old wiring causes a lot of issues which make the Gremlins come out. It's one thing to burn up a couple old Coils, it sucks to burn up a new one!.....
