Have the pump out getting rebuilt for our 7000. What is the correct pump timing? When we took it off we could not find the mark on the pump at all. I have an aftermarket manual that says 18 deg btdc they is where is set the crank before taking it apart. Is this the best timing when going back together?

No marks in timing window? the procedure is to set the timing marks in the window and at that point it should be on the correct degrees BTDC on the balancer. Pump shop should be able to confirm correct "timing" for that pump/engine. A factory manual should have that info too.

18 sounds right , but without seeing timing marks on the pump , it could be 180 off- which aint too big of deal ; just gotta get number 1 piston up ,- some time those marks are hard to see on the pump

If you where 180 degrees off the marks would not be in pump 18 deg before tdc is right

We checked for marks at 18 both ways and watched the window for two full revolutions. Could not find anything. That is a first for me but I will say it has been opened up before and the shop said it was a shady rebuild let whoever was in there. I have it at 18 on compression now and the pump will be marked. The pump shop thought they used to recommend 20 I just thought I’d ask here first.

You've made a bad decision removing the pump the way you did. If there were no marks, (there had to be one mark on the cam ring in the rear half of the window) it would have been wise to place the engine at 18 degrees BTDC, remove the injection pump gear and remove the pump all while NEVER turning the pump drive gear hub from the place it was. Mark the hub somehow for reference and take the pump to the repair shop explaining that you don't know if you are timed on #1 or #6 cylinder. He could/would have determined this, marked the pump like it should have been and told you the engine is correct (on #1) or needs to be turned 360 degrees to install the pump. Now you've got a 50/50 shot or remove the valve cover to determine #1 or #6.

The pump shop could not make one out either. Is the preferred timing 18deg btdc?
