My 19-year-old grandson started 9 weeks of chemo this week.
He was diagnosed with testicular cancer a few weeks ago. He had to have one testicle surgically removed. After removal his makers were still going up and they discovered that it had metastasized to a lymph node, necessitating the chemo.
Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers!

For those of you that attended the Madrid NY GOTO, Lukas was the volunteer EMT that was around the grounds on his golf cart. Since his early teens, he has been driving my AC tractors in local parades. An update on his treatment. One week of chemo done. He has a little nausea and seems to tire easily, but otherwise doing well. His chemo regime is: weeks 1, 4 and 7 - five daily treatments, Monday through Friday. weeks 2. 3. 5, 6, 8 and 9 - one treatment per week. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. It is appreciated more than you will ever know!!!

Just a follow up note.
We received some good news this week after the end of week 5 (of 9 weeks) of chemo. His "tumor markers have dropped from 118.5 on August 19 to 17.4 on September 9 (normal is 0, but less than 8 is acceptable).
Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers! We are (cautiously) optimistic!!!

A long overdue update. Lukas rang the bell (signifying the end of treatment) a while back. During the treatment, his "tumor marker level" dropped from 118 (normal is >8.0) to 2.2!
He will have a scan soon, but his doctors are optimistic that he will be cancer free.
Thanks to all for their thoughts and prayers!!! It is appreciated more than I could ever express.
The picture is with family (I am on the left) after his bell ringing. His volunteer fire department, where he is a volunteer EMT and Rescue Captain, brought an ambulance and fire truck to his bell ringing. It was a very emotional day!!!

Ok, I'm back begging prayers again.
When Lukas was diagnosed, they removed one testicle and found that the cancer had metastasized to a lymph node in his abdomen.
Below is a post from his mom, Deanna (our daughter) who is an RN. She explains it better than I can.
I've had several people ask me questions about https://www.facebook.com/lukas.kompan.54?__cft__%5b0%5d=AZUyUIzFuxabxKfaZAC7zYqEr_RMbS0NeCVRVODo8bIbkqA93VXT0xQjUpASy9z5Ihcqfx5jjRZWlmDP_po1Q2cTYbOxgmenuy5Anj4qnf6mVOprAzKziEUhifgvezRH7YyLtENM0B68sRRtKkuxYoiZf3s65SB3-XOtlVCX9kfsz921kW72kgbzPxLJkD6RYqo&__tn__=-%5dK-y-R" rel="nofollow - recently, so I figured I'd post an update (with his permission). Lukas had a scan on 11/13 to check the lymph node that had showed evidence of metastasis previously. Unfortunately, the results of that scan were not what we'd hoped. The lymph node has actually gotten significantly larger. Lukas' primary tumor was a mixed type (this is common) of tumor that had three types of cancer cells in it. One type (the teratoma) is not susceptible to chemo, and unfortunately, that's the type they feel has moved. The plan is to go to Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC next week for a pre-op appointment, and then again on 12/18 for removal. This is pretty major surgery, and he's expected to be inpatient for a week, and he'll need some recovery time after. We appreciate all the thoughts, prayers, and good wishes, but from a practical standpoint, we seem to have it all managed. Right now, we just need some time to plan and process. Thank you all for the support.

An update on Lukas.
Lukas had surgery last Wednesday, December 18 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. His incision was from the bottom of his sternum to the groin, going around the navel. My wife, who has been an RN for 40 years and daughter (Lukas' mother) who has been an RN for 20 years, both agree that they had never seen a longer incision.
They removed a tumor, tentatively identified as a teratoma (still waiting for pathology). If they are right and the tumor is a teratoma, his cancer treatment will be done, and his prognosis is for a complete recovery.
After all this rambling, Lukas called us about 4 PM to say they had discharged him, and he was on his way home! This has to be our best Christmas gift ever.

I can see, already, that 2025 is going to be a better year for our family.
Lukas had an (online) appointment with his surgeon yesterday. The pathology is back on the tumor, and it was a teratoma, like they suspected. This means Lukas is done with cancer treatment.
He will have follow-up checkups for at least the next five years.
He's had a rough four months! He had three surgeries and nine weeks of chemotherapy. The incision from the last surgery took 66 staples to close it up! It's an awful lot for a 19-year-old kid (when he was diagnosed)!
Lukas has worked through all of it. He's a full-time RN and a part-time and volunteer EMT. Some of you that attended the GOTO in Madrid NY last year, may remember him as the EMT that was running around, helping out anyone that needed him. Two weeks after surgery, He is working (part time) again in a crisis center, where he only does evaluations and dispenses prescribed drugs (no lifting, so he is able to work). He is definitely a workaholic!
Sincere heartfelt thanks go out to all of you that helped out with prayers from me and my family. They are appreciated more than you can ever know!!!
