I've read alot about frost plugs, but when I look at the head from my D17 series 4, there are only two, and they are more like core plugs... not the button type pop in plugs shown and discussed.  I can't find new ones online, as I'm in the process of putting a new head gasket it, thought I'd change those too.  Any help on these plugs and why are they different than what I find online?  Thanks.

Edit... the plugs I took out are about 1-1/2" by 1" and solid.

I looked at an AGCO page, pulled up the D17 head parts list.  The "core plug" shown is not what I have.  I flipped the head over, and drove the two plugs out of the top.  They are solid pieces, 1-1/2" long, 1" diameter.  Could someone have rebuilt it before, and substituted a solid plug instead of the "cap" type shown?  I tried to include a picture, but can't get it down to the 2mb size limit.  Thank you, Dr Allis.

I'm wondering if I can replace with standard freeze plugs?  Not sure why these were in the head.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but there should only be two in a 1968 D17 Series IV, yes?  Thanks again.

Those are not replaceable core plugs. They are permanent plugs not mean to be removed. All D17 cylinder I have seen, have that style. They can be identified by a tapered bottom towards the center and are solid steel. Not flat bottom like replaceble core plugs.

Well crap.... now what?  Clean them and the bore up and put them back?   Haven't done this before, in case you hadn't guessed.  And I'm guessing, being permanent, very slim chance of ever leaking?   I am taking it to a machine shop this week, maybe they can save me.  Thank you.

When looked up 230357 it shows the plug.
