New to the forum.  Just bought a 1975 440.  I plan to restore the unit and use it on the farm.  The hydraulic fluid has water in it, most likely due to the tank cap being damaged and allowing water in.  Can anybody walk me though flushing the hydraulic system? Also, can I use universal sae 10-30 hydraulic fluid in the system?  The owner's manual calls for straight 10.  Thank you in advance.

Dont know what my two 440's have in them. I never had to add or change it. Mine are # 1576 and # 1577 ---- what is your #?  I could have had 1578 but didnt have the money to get it.

Welcome
Since nobody seems to know I will stick my neck out to be chopped off when I am wrong. As I have never been on a 440. With the book saying 10# oil, I would guess the hydraulic system is not part of any other thing like the transmission, as most tractors are. So at least as a flushing fluid use cheap yellow bucket oil.

I have farmed with old crawler tractors for 50 years. All add on hydraulic systems so I have been using the cheapest possible yellow bucket oil. I did have a failure with it 2 years ago. It had a wax like substance completely choke off the screen on my suction side of pump. It had been sitting for several months. Upon use after a hour I had less and less hydraulic pressure to lift remote equipment, so I stopped. Once clean everything worked, with more yellow bucket that was on hand.  But have not bought any more since then.

They just use an Eaton truck trans so i'm sure the hyd system is an add on of some kind. Any good hyd oil should work. Just an opinion.....

Hyd system is by itself!! NOT part of the trans.!
