I'm certain it will function as intended in the original purpose/need. However, there is room for improvement.

Around 1976, my grandfather had cancer pretty bad. He like to down in the basement and take his afternoon nap on a cot that he had. Problem was how do you turn the basement light off from the cot. So he rigged up pulleys and string so that he could turn any of the basement lights on or off while laying down. This kind of reminds me of his ingenuity.

I have an elderly customer who has a basement that occasionally floods. She has a sump pump that sits on the floor over a floor drain. Little bit of a depression where floor drain is . Not deep enough for sump pump to turn on by itself before it floods the water heater and furnace. Deep enough that the pump will pump the water out and the pump shuts itself off . She rigged up something like this. She can see the water from the top off the stairs and pull the string to turn the pump on before the water heater is flooded . I explained to her she needs a pit installed below the floor but she says this works for me.   Can't raise water heater, furnace without a lot of work, money. She keeps stuff up on blocks and deals with it

I just use a porcelain fixture with the pull chain switch on it.  Just tie a cord to the end of the pull switch and run it through little screweyes to where ever you need it.  Just pull on/off.
