Have 20 speed power director in Allis 7020. When tractor is running you can hear a knocking or slapping sound from transmission area. Can also hear it in the cab. It will go away when you push in the clutch, but as soon as you let out it comes right back. It does not go away until you get it above 1700 RPM or you are moving in gear. Is this something I should be concerned about or will it be ok? Can I add anything to hydraulic fluid to safely quiet this slapping/knocking sound down.

Gear backlash noise. Very normal. When the torque limiter disc gets older and looser this is worse. Do nothing. Don't let it sit there and run like that as it doesn't do anything good. Speed engine up a little. Might be better in neutral or in 4th or 5th gear ??

Rattled when new at low speeds. Worn is worse. Speed up to quiet down is about all you can do.

Dr Allis,

Does not do it in gear or when clutch is pushed in so not sure what you mean by 4th or 5th gear.

Only does it when sitting idling when clutch is not pushed in.

You can leave the 5-speed transmission in any of the 5 selections with the clutch pedal UP. You have the PARK lever in park, so the tractor won't move. I'm just saying MAYBE if you left the 5-speed in a particular gear, the rattling noise would be lessened.

Gotcha, I understand what you are saying now.

Never had to mess with transmission on this or any Allis. Is this something that will be okay to run like this or is this something that I should be worried about?

IGNORE IT !! But try to set the throttle so minimize the noise is best.

Ok, not trying to beat a dead horse here, but you guys are saying it is the torque limiter disc then? What will happen when this torque limiter disc wears all the way out? Just trying to learn and gain an understanding of this transmission and how it works.

It isn't the TL disc per say. It is the backlash between all 12 gears inside the main transmission rattling. It's worse when the oil is at operating temperature versus cold. It is worse when the TL disc spring damper has some age on it. It is worse if the engine doesn't run smoothly. You can split the tractor and replace the TL disc and it may be quieter when you get done, but it will probably never be perfectly quiet because that's just the way they are.

and IF the torque limiter totally strips out or 'fails' - you will lose everything - steering - clutch - pto etc. - all hydraulics . Just as if the engine was not running.
