| what's the toughest one out there? can't get the filters off my combine. had my old nylon strap type, it spread the square tube out on it, pounded it back down and put a clamp around it and then the strap broke! PffffT! sooooooo...I had one of them steel strap ones that the harder you pulled/pushed the tighter it would clamp around, not nuff strength to pull/push the handle, put a pipe on it, pipe was to long, cut pipe down, bent the handle on the tool...Pfffft....PffffT. went and bought a new nylon strap wrench...all it does is stretch out. I spose I could start hammering on a chisel...just in an unhandy place to do that. any other suggestions out there? giving that new ladder a workout! |

Pound a long shaft screwdriver thru it, and then an pipe over the screwdriver handle, the longer the pipe, the easier it will spin. ------------- I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science. |

I had one that tough about 20 years ago... Had to drive the screw driver thru it as Lars said and then a pipe to break it loose.. NOT PRETTY when you get done, but thats the last resort.
they make strap wrenches made of CHAIN also.. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

I have a set of vise-grips with a chain,(a kind of mini chain-fall wrench,,but with vise grip), when I got one that will not move,, its the go-to I have had the screwdriver trick just rip the metal off the base of some,, then your really in to it then....

I have an inch wide "Rigid" brand nylon strap wrench I purchased in the 70's and it doesn't slip if the surface is clean. I also have a chain wrench but it's a little "fat" to get behind in some locations. Have several of the steel band oil filter wrenches also. Seldom see any filter I can't get loose but have in the past and used a cold chisel on the base of the filter to break the bond. Most times this is because the installer didn't realize you only need to tighten these 1/2 to 3/4 turn after the seal contacts the base even though it usually printed in any guidance. ------------- That's All Folks! |

| I also have one of those chain/visegrip types, all it did was crush the tin. I have heard of the screw driver thru them, but was afraid of breaking the filters off, then what? guess piece by piece! thanlks ya'll, seems it takes me 3 days to do what I used to do in an hour before. PfffffT! |

Well, Good Buddy,,,As many say here, the screw driver thru the filter and pipe will usually do the trick!! It ain't pretty but does get that Ftrsyurfbfye5646758 filter off!!! GOOD LUCK,,,!!!

| If it has not crushed already then try to roughen the surface with an old belt sander belt and then try the strap or the chain wrench. Or put the belt in between the two and try that. |

| I used to have a pair of Big Azz Channel Locks that I removed Oil Filters with. You could adjust to any size filters,get right to the base and the handles were long enough to get a lot of torque. But I must have planted them somewhere as the last time I looked for them I couldn't find them! They worked great for skidsteers hydraulic filter. |

My go-to is a filter pliers. Like a channel lock pliers, but the jaws are curved to fit the filter. Whatever wrench you use, try to get as close to the base as you can. ------------- Looking at the past to see the future. Check out a Caterpillar 185-3630 strap wrench. A web search will turn up some for less than buying from CAT. I got one from CAT years ago when spin-ons for CAT equipment got bigger. It has a wider strap and is better about getting stuck filters loose without total crushing. It has about a 2 inch wide strap and has a 1/2 square drive hole. |

Sheesh, I had a stubborn one like that, drove the screw driver through it, which eventually all that did was rip the can off like a can opener and the base still hadn’t budged. Ended up getting a pipe wrench on it. Barely. My vote is a chain wrench. |

Good luck on getting that sucker loose. Don't have any other methods to add. My problem is not that the chain is too fat, I'm too fat to get under the vehicle to get to the filter. When reinstalling filters hand tight plus 1/2 turn. ------------- Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God. |

Been there, done that....I've done it a few times (maybe 5) and it's a PITA after that. I'd go with the CAT wrench for sure. It's sounds like it should be heads above the rest of em cause it's 2" wide. Get as close as you can to the base and PRAY!! Good luck Buddy! ------------- "Allis-Express" 19?? BIG channel lock pliers usually gets them and sometimes driving a big screwdriver thru gets used, In the end a few times after the filter has been torn apart by the above items a hammer and punch gets used on the remains of the filters base to get it to turn. ------------- AC 200, CAH, AC185D bareback, AC 180D bareback, D17 III, WF. | well after working on one all afternoon, finally got it off at about a 1/16th inch at a time. whew! still got another one to go, it's just as tight. i'll work on it tomarrow. jeesh...no way to properly describe this except...well I can't say it on the forum! I think the neighbors heard me this afternoon. the old lady....ooooops....I mean the loving wife brought the puppies out to see me, which is always a joy to see them, but after they heard me talking to the filters they cowarded down and headed back to the house! after this is done and new oil put in I can concentrait on getting the unloading auger to swing out, then hopefully start harvest and see what else happens! I did pay up the insurance on the combine today! not say'in.... |
