I am looking for a new starter for my 7020 project.
I have a choice of Nippodenso at around 275 or a rebuilt Lucas
at nearly double that. Will the nippodenso last a while?

i dont know about that specific starter, but Japan makes pretty good alternators and starters.. in general... I would not be afraid of that.

Lucas was an ENGLAND company that made electric parts..  Back in the day they were know as  "The Prince of Darkness"  .... not a good name for a company that made LIGHTS !  Wink

Google Prince of Darkness.....

----------

But first, let us get the jokes out of the way to clear out our system for the knowledge to come.

  • The Lucas corporate motto: “Get home before dark.”
  • If Lucas made guns, wars would not start.
  • Lucas holds the patent for the short circuit.
  • Lucas – Inventor of the intermittent wiper.
  • Lucas – Inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.
  • The three position Lucas switch – Dim, Flicker and Off
  • The Original Anti-Theft Device – Lucas Electrics.
  • Lucas is an acronym for Loose Unsoldered Connections and Splices

Looks like somebody doesn't like Lucas starters. I can only base my opinion on the one on my 200. In January the old 200 will be 50 yrs. old and the starter has been rebuilt once. I think that's pretty darn good, but maybe I've been lucky. Could be because it's starts as soon as it cranks a couple of times.

Given a choice, Id take the Nippodenso also. Having said that, my 185 and 6080 both have Lucas starters that work fine.

Im  not really a Lucas hater.. Its more of a joke... British bikes in the 1950- 1960 all had Lucas electronics and the vibrations caused a LOT of problems with the lights / mags / ignition... They got a bad name WAY BACK then..

I have saw a few Lucas starters that spun engine over fast and last good. Have saw a lot more that was junk even on new tractors.              MACK

A Mucas starter on a field tractor probably didn't work out too bad. Always warm weather. Always one or two starts in an 8 hr day. A Mucas starter on a "chore" tractor is usually a bad idea. Cold weather starts. Multiple starts within a few hrs each and every day. That's the way it is. They were sub-standard compared to A Delco for sure.

NipponDenso #028000-6780 starter fits AC180, 185, 190, 190xt, 200, 7000, 7010, 7020 and 8010 tractors. Replaces Allis 70242143 and 79004832 starters. I've this starter in my 185 and 200 replacing LUCAS units. This starter was the difference in starting or not starting on cool mornings on the 200 to feed hay/ clean driveway.
