Have a 4 cylinder Perkins diesel engine, what determines the cubic size?

Look in the alternator area and see if there are numbers stamped on the block just above the alternator. if it says 248U xxxx it is a 248.  If there are numbers stamped on the left side of the block above the injection pump, it could be either 236 or 248 I think. This is according to an owners manual.

on the MF Perkins the 248 has bolts on the edge of the tappet cover and the 236 are in the middle. The 236 or 248 is on the intake tag.  Same cubic inches different engine. AC use the industrial engine.  Much tougher - but a devil to overhaul.
