Not sure why it happened other than the fact that stuff happens especially on old(er) equipment, but while operating the tractor (nothing with the PTO) I heard a sharp but not too loud >bang!<, didn't think too much of it until I looked down and the tach wasn't working. The needle vibrates a little with throttle increases but nothing else. I honestly forgot to even look to see if the hour meter was still working or not. Anyways, not a single mention of it in either of the 2 service manuals I have. Advice, pointers, or show me where to go online, please? All my searches have only produced results for parts.Which yes, I'm sure I'll need, but replacing or repairing it, and -- I'm ignorant. Never had to do the job before now.
Thanks in advance,
 - Tim

First thing I would do is un screw the cable from the rear of the tach. See if you can turn the cable by hand, if not start the engine and see if it turns. If it is turning then it may be your tach drive broke. If it isn't turning then it may be your cable which would be to your benefit. Remove the cable and see if it’s broken inside the sheath by pulling the cable out.

There are some 6140 parts tractors out there if you end up needing a Tach or other components. I would think a new cable would still be available from AGCO but you would need to check with a dealer.

Thanks, there are fewer and fewer places with salvage 6140s. Plus, not likely that they know if the tach or cable are in working condition, they've probably never had any running machines in the yard. I did source a cable, fits the 6140 plus a few M-F machines also built by Hinomoto using Toyosha engines.
