My boys project C is turning into a real project.  Discovered last night it won't stay in 3rd.  1, 2, and reverse are find.  Shove it into 3rd and it'll pop out as soon as you let off the clutch.  What are the probable issues and what are we looking at to fix it?

the dogs on the side of the gears are probably rounded off from speed shifting... grinding over many years... needs disassembled and replaced.

You can take the round cover off the right side of transmission and look inside to get an idea of damage.... the shift forks are attached to the plate so it takes some work to get it aligned and back together.... look inside if your really interested.... possible a fork is bent, or a detent ball is worn out... but that is not the most common.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

The B&C transmissions are sliding gear transmissions, not a constant mesh transmission that has sliding collars with dogs. However the most likely problem is the same. Worn gears from grinding them from operator abuse. The easy fix is to swap in a good transmission. When you get yours apart, you'll most likely find worn bearings as well as rounded gears.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY
