Hello merry Christmas 
Have something in mind that I’d like answered.
I have 05 gmc 2500hd. With 6.0 gas motor. It has 189,000 miles. The trucks in good shape for mileage and being in northeast.
With that said. I also have a 2001 gmc 6.0 2500hd. Same truck. That I wrecked back in 07. My thought was if the tranny could be rebuilt from the 01 to go into 05. And could the motor be rebuilt from the 01 to go in the 05. As just even short block as I suspect there’s different sensors and odds an ends different.
Guess my thoughts were to them rebuilt and ready in the event that one or the other craps out in the 05. So there’s no big down time.
Am I over thinking it lol.

My 'option' would be to pull COMPLETE engine,tranny AND 'computer' of the '01 and toss into the '05
Major question is ARE the wiring harnesses the SAME ?

I think engine wise they are essentially the same. You can always swap parts from one to the other so there won't be a need for harness issues. Sensors, maybe intake/injectors. Not much else would be different. I don't think 2500 has cylinder cancellation BS whether they even did it then or not.

I have no answers but my Transmission lasted 230000 miles
The 6.0 is setting at 500000 plus and had nothing but a couple water pumps
Intake gaskets and spark plugs.
Rattles on a cold morning and starting to burn a quart between changes.

Might check on some of the GM sites that deal with this swap . 
I have a 2000 GMC 2500 4x4 and well when transfer case went bad , i picked up a 2003 transfer case from a unit that had been rebuilt , someone bought the engine and transmission so fellow had the transfer case left . "
  and then the problems started - wire hookup between 2 was different , plug to shift module was different as was the input shaft to module , found only way to change was to open up case and change internals , so bought a used unit for $75 that was said to be good , it wasn't , (found out after installing it) 
  Decided to rebuild mine but could not find anyone willing to set clearances on clutch pack for the full time 4x4 - only rebuild the unit for $1700 or so . Tool to set the clutches was over $200 . 
  Well a fellow board member said he rebuilt his own and just installed to clutch pack without setting shim height , so what I did also - clutch pack $60 , bearings $40 , time spent - won't get into that as after install and removal of the 2003 case , install and removal of the junk 2000 unit , and spending the time tearing mine down and doing the overhaul - anger kept me from taking time to remember the frustration .
 Ended up selling the 2003 case and got my money back , son used the selector motor of junk unit so it saved him $100 or more for not having to buy a new one . 
 For me I am unsure if the full time clutch works or not as don't use that feature now but it's held up for going into 2nd plowing season and still works . Pushes snow fine and goes into 2 wheel drive .
  Big problem comes in the wiring now on any engine sway as the firewall plug differs between years and you need the computer from engine your using to match vehicle .
  other thing i learned along the way is my 2000 GMC -2500 is on a 1/2 ton frame as they did not have a 3/4 heavy frame ready for the year , also learned MN rust has did a number on truck , frame , and body . Gas tank mounts replaced with banding strap , fuel lines and brake lines replaced , but a $65,000 replacement unit is NOT in the future .

Check with your local salvage yard sometimes they have interchange books. They might be able to tell you if it's going to work or not.

Im with THAD... You getting about 10,000 miles per year on the truck... 180K now .. probably go another 100K before it needs trans or motor.. Thats 10 years ... Plans changed a lot in 10 years... at this point i would WAIT..
