OK so after several days of fiddling with his tank trying to clean it filling it with 5/16 inch nuts (10 pounds of them )strapping them on my D 15 series 2 rear tire while I plow snow for two days then clean it out with every step of POR 15 which by the way was 150 bucks plus for all of the different chemicals. I left to dry for 3 1/2 days and I just looked in there after carrying it back up to the shop and the whole inside membrane of POR 15 let go and it’s just flopping around in there…a complete failure, obviously pretty much everything went wrong! Ok I’m going to strap it now to my cement mixer and give it another shot! Pffftttt…..

I take my tanks to my radiator man and he boils them out and glass coats the inside IF it needs coated. He’s done several tanks for me and had zero problems with them. Good luck.

I agree with the comment from Sparky.  Radiator shop cleaning, testing and repair is a good option.  Only problem is radiator shops are closing and there is not one left in our area that will clean a gas tank.

The B,C,CA tanks fit in my blasting cabinet. The inside bottom gets blasted. Sometimes I end up with more then the factory holes, but I am always pleased when it works and the tractor runs without carb problems.

I have used "Works" toilet cleaner to remove the rust, but because it is hydrochloric acid, it will flash rust if you don't passivate it immediately.  I get it thoroughly rinsed out and then that is where the phosphoric acid comes in.  I have used Klean Strip Prep and Etch.  It can be diluted.  The phosphoric acid leaves behind a layer of phosphoric oxide that blocks rust.  It is a thin and fragile coat, but in a gas tank, it works pretty well.  It converts the steel to the phosphoric oxide.  There is no layer to peal off.  I then keep the tank full as much as possible.

Evapo rust would probably be better than the Works and would not etch the surface as much, but I have not tried that.

Keep in mind, the tank has to be solid to use the Works. If it isn't, you will end up with all kinds of pinholes.

Do you coat them after they are cleaned?

The shop cleans them and them coats them.  They use muriatic acid to clean the tank.  If you do not get it lined after afterwards it will rust pretty quickly as the acid leaves the metal bare and unprotected.  Once it is lined, you are set.  All the metal is covered, so you will not have any rust issues.

X3!  I don't get involved with acid and all that other crap. For what the Cap spent on POR15, I get my tanks boiled and coated at the Rad shop. Might be losing my Rad shop pretty soon though. I heard through the grapevine, my Rad guy is gonna retire. Dang it! Might havta' find another guy. And them Rad shops are closing up one by one! Better send my RC tank down before he shuts down!.....

Well I finally found a shop that would attempt to fix my CA gas tank and their estimate is six to $800.

Dang!! My last 2 tanks cost me $150 apiece. He may think a CA tank is the size of a Kenworth. Both tanks were serviced in the summer of 2020.

I never heard of any pricing like this.   Our local shop, which closed last year charged $85 for the last tank I had cleaned and repaired a year ago.  I did not have it sealed, that would have been extra cost.

Well I finally found a shop that would attempt to fix my CA gas tank and their estimate is six to $800.

Since I bought this online never hearing it run I was anxious to hear what I have. Changed all oils filters HD coolant, plugs points condenser cap rotor wiring hoses belts, new temp gauge batt cables rebuilt carb etc. The dang gas tank remains to be fixed. Today I installed a champion gas tank from an old generator we had in the scrap metal pile. Wood, glue, screws, bolts and rubber padding installation. New gas lines, fittings and filter. She popped off quickly with her new ought battery cables and ran ok. I timed it by ear (for today) and took a ride in 25* 4pm conditions. Brakes, clutch, hand clutch, gear all seem perfect. Steering is as new no slop at all. Third gear perfect. All gears checked going downhill. The more it ran the better it ran. The old man collector Had really taken care of it and I don’t believe had hardly used it. That’s all for this evening news 😁 folks! Stay warm, safe, happy and healthy please! Dana

The last kitI bought from JC Whitney and it was around $25. Acts held up for 15 years and never pealed.its now a heavy cream color it was bright white when I did it.I just checked Amazon has the original Kreem fuel tank kit for $53.

Asking that kinda money is one of two things, the kids took over the business or they have absolutely no interest in doing your tank. There's people on here that probably have a tank or a good idea where you can find one.

Glad you found a replacement!
I've got a 'problem' CA gas tank myself, have been watching this thread closely. It had some damage that was visible when I bought it. Took it off the tractor to fix it this fall. Uncovered three leaks, would love to know how the damage happened! Anyway, I have brazed, and brazed, and brazed on the stupid thing and can't get it to seal. The leak is down to tiny but still there, a sealant on the inside would probably fix it. It will still need body filler to look right so I'm leaning toward a good used replacement, if I can find one. Sad thing is, other than the leak, the tank is in fantastic shape!

Clean and solder it... mmm, I know you can't weld where brazing is, can't remember if soldier sticks to brazing or not.
Bought a tractor that had the tank relined with that red tank liner. couple years later it was back to leaking and I looked in and the goop was hanging in the tank... If you can get a nice glass sealer to work in there it might be better, but imo, I wouldn't waste time coating the inside of tank with the liquid liner, just a temporary solution.

North Country in Queensbury did a tank for me off our family heirloom JD M, about 2 years ago. Cleaned and lined in the $400 range.

At first I didn’t want to spend that kind of money on a $1500 dollar tractor. Thinking along the same lines myself:  “For that, I’m almost a third of the way there to a whole other tractor.”….But another tractor wasn’t going to fix what I already had and after scrounging for the perfect used tank, I couldn’t fine one much better than the one I had, so I bit the bullet ,spent the money, and was instantly glad I did. After years of spitting, sputtering, dying and multiple carb cleans; Tractor has ran like a champ and hasn’t missed a single beat since.

Yes Jay where are you located? I tried calling North Country Radiators three days in a row before Christmas I guess they took the week off. I bought a nice tank it’s on its way however I’d like to fix this one too for someone who needs it. Dana
