Replacing # 1 & 2 cylinders jug, piston & heads, how many & what thickness of shims should I have on hand to to install on jugs to make the intial clearance check, I would rather remove shims than have to add.All parts that I,m using have never been & don't need to be machined. Thanks Dave

Add a couple to the old stack you removed would be a good place to start.

Always add more shims than needed. Assemble the cylinder and use a thick solder off a roll to insert in the injector hole - tighten the head  - no need to final torque now -  then turn the engine over to allow piston to smash the solder - remove solder and measure the piston to head clearance - then do the math , loosen the head bolts and lift the sleeve and cut off enough shims to obtain correct clearance.  Depending on how high your math scores were in school would determine if a second check was necessary :-)
