Hello everyone, im new here and I've got a question. A while back I got an old hd6 with a stuck motor as a project. I've got it unstuck and am reassembling everything. I figured while I had the motor out id check and replace the main engine clutch plates and friction discs if needed. The metal discs checked out good but the friction disc's were wore. I ordered new ones from General Gear in Idaho. I got them the other day and measured them. Now my manual says new should be .245 to .257 I think(not in front of me) and to replace at .217. The ones I got new are between .204 and .209 so I called them and they said they have selling them like that for 15 years and I'm the first person that ever asked that question. Question is did allis chalmers make some revision or change the specs that my manual doesn't show or am I missing something else? Thanks in advance for any help.

They did put 2 different clutches in the 6's. Dry clutches on the first ones. Wet clutches on the last ones. Dang, it's been 10 years since I had 1 apart. Even longer on an early model. Yours must be an earlier unit. If they said it will work, they are probably right. Did they send you an extra disk. I've seen them take up the slack by inserting an extra plate.

I am still have 4 used friction discs and just check and they are round .253 to .255

The engine in mine is a 6000 series. Dont know if they used an older clutch on the newer motor when the put it in or not. It is definitely a wet clutch. Its almost a 3/16th diffrence. How would i go about taking that much up? I dont know if there's that much adjustment.
Gemdozer, thats interesting in deed if I can't make this work.

did general gear specifically sell you wet clutch discs?  I havnt seen them advertise replacements except on dry clutch machines, but i wasnt looking either.

They do have them listed but it was hard to find. I emailed them to verify they were for a wet clutch. They said they were so here I am..lol
Does anyone have a manual that they can verify the thickness in to compare to what my manual says?

hmm, well since they arnt originals perhaps a guy just needs to go by total clutch pack thickness.  its possible the new ones dont need to be as thick with modern material?  sorry no real help here, i dont have a good answer for you.

I wonder if anyone has the part number for these things? If im not mistaken aren't the friction discs the same in the bigger dozers to? Hd 11 and 16's? Just more of them i think..

Also you might need to ad 70 to the beginning  of those part numbers...at the end AC was using 8 digits for part numbers....may or may not help.  I also checked part numbers for the HD11s to see if they were the same? there not...we have a couple of complete units on the shelf....would probably part with.

The HD6 and HD11  wet cluch disc are the same 645451

Well thats good to know. So I guess my problem is I dont know if I want to install the ones I have and hopefully have enough adjustment to make it work. Really don't like that idea. Finding ones within the right dimensions seems like alot better idea to me. Rather only do this once. If you guys think you have 4 fiber discs that are within specs im all ears. Thanks

This talk of adding a plate is common for steering clutches Confused but thought we where having master clutch problems?

Any main clutch that running is oil that I have had out has very, very little ware on the friction surface. The ware that has made them unusable was the drive teeth where ready to be gone.

Ray54, I agree with you. I got this dozer in nonrunning condition. Pulled motor to get it free and at that time found the oil pump for the main clutch to be broke. I think the previous owner didn't know it wasn't oiling the clutch and kept adjusting the clutch to get it to work..thats were the ware came in.

Your new 4 discs are .217 and the minimum is .215 and the 3 used discs plate maybe you gone missing adjustement.

New discs are suppose to be .245 to .255. Suppose to replace at .217. The ones I got are .204 to .209.

Did you have any success on this? I have a 6000 motor that I am going to swap into an early HD6B (S/N 3XXX) with the HD344 motor. I'm trying to figure out what I need to swap over and what I need to replace when I drop in the 6000.
