 1. A crankshaft's main journals are factory spec of 2.250.
 2. The front crank journal calipers to 2.238
 3. the middle crank journal calipers to 2.240
 4. The rear crank journal calipers to 2.238
Do these readings tell me that the crank has been turned .020 and will the clearances be too tight with .020 bearings?

i would guess it was turned .010 under... and a couple journals wore 2 thousandths.  I would reuse .010 bearings.

2.240 + .010 = 2.250

2.238 + .010 = 2.248  ( worn 2 thousandths)

  Well,,,ole Buddy,,let me tell you a "short" story,,,,,Wink
Back when we lived in the mountains west of here my Dad had an old car,,,,a 1940 Chevy,,,I think. I nevere did like that car as it had that humpback and looked like one of them Chit-roller bugs,,,,,LOL
The engine had a bad crank journal that would start knockin every so often and he had this "Special Leather Belt" That we were forbidden to even look at,,!! He would let us remove the oil pan while he would slice off real thin pieces from that leather belt and then slip em onto the rod cap tighten her up and then we would bolt her right up,,,good for another 3 or 4 hundred miles,,,,believe it or else,,,,,LOL
I remembered we had to drive UP Denny Hill  IN REVERSE,,,but that is another story,,,,,LOL

Actually, Thad ,,the journals looked real pretty and calipered out with very consistant readings,,I just got a heck of a brain fog with the bearings I needed. I was concerned with the old bearings as the babbit was starting to flake off down the center of the 3 journals and the babbit was almost Black and would not come clean even with steel wool,,,!!Don't have an idee what kind of oil the PO used as the WHOLE inside of engine was all Black and smudges your hands Black till I took the pressure washer to it for a couple of hours,,,!!!! Never seen one like this,,,,
