Folks,
Had a lapse in the old brain waves and held my hand up just a little too long at the antique auction yesterday.
I did not really need another project. Maybe it needed me more? Anyway there were only minor injury's getting it home. A lighting of the wallet as usual and several stories.
The run down as far as today:
- Paid way too much for it! It must be something special?? Probably not!
- So 1957 D14
- Manual steering
- Great oil pressure.
- It starts and runs really well, no smoke.
- clutch and power director work good when you remember to use it!;)
- Hydraulic needed some fluid, comes right up.
- was one owner tractor from local dealer in Bushnell OH.
- Forgot to look at tach operation, probably not.
- Loader, Humm dont have a loader tractor. Used that already, to move the fork bucket.
- Its the Allis Loader, missing the legs for supporting the loader when detached.
- rear rims and tires are pretty good. Goodyear rears. No rot in loaded tires,
- front tires well worn. right front was flat.
- Battery was dead, jumped at auction to start. Had to jump to get on trailer.
- Realized in the middle of the night it has a 6 volt battery in it that is hooked up neg ground. That's just not right!
- Yea I bout a set of two bottom Allis plows that have seen better days, but I have seen worse too.
- Also bought a set of tire chains which I believe are for it?? Heavy bull links.
- Loader has a push blade on it. Thought it might make a good snow plow tractor??? With chains and loaded tires???

Ok pictures, should have done those first because you guys just jumped to the pictures anyway.
Plans?? I don't know? Maybe get electrical straightened out? Maybe plow day next month?
Future snow plow tractor??

Need left side panel:

Fork bucket in pretty good shape, for the shape its in:

DO NOT insert your finger in the underside of the front latch near the fan!!

She needs a good bath for sure!

Well, there will probably be more later. :)
Thanks for checking in on me.
Regards,
Chris

Sorry about your finger.  I know when things like that happen, it can be discouraging and takes the "luster" out of the tractor work.  Nevertheless, it's all about the "save another A-C for prosperity sake."  You'll be glad you did. Trust me.  Have fun and enjoy the ride!  it could of went to China and another D-14 would have been lost forever.  Thanks again for your efforts!

She's a thing of beauty and do NOT forget it ,lest another finger will be 'told be nice to me' !
Reminds me of Troy, my first D-14, 'cept he wasn't in running condition.

Early '57 , has push start. BTW 6 volt has different starter gear and ring gear. The 'cheat' to know is look at the starter, if it has a band around it...she's 6 volt.
Troy only has the loader frame on it now, rest long gone.

sniff,sniff...

Thank guys,
Never know if I have saved something or just created more work??
Her first job. Pretty sure its a girl, it has taken two bites out of me so far!
The fan and the finger did not go well! For me anyway!

https://youtu.be/6asajEm2EQc" rel="nofollow - https://youtu.be/6asajEm2EQc

So the 6 volt battery (which is correct) that was dated 3-22, was installed with the terminals incorrect. I charged the battery. Then reversed the leads to positive ground and polarized the generator, at the voltage regulator. After a couple starts it began to show charge! I will leave it 6 volt if it charges and functions ok. Forgot to check the battery for indication of charging.
She looks pretty rough, fresh from the farm!
https://youtu.be/RYI4aypw9d4" rel="nofollow - https://youtu.be/RYI4aypw9d4

Started a little work on the plows. They are in bad shape. Not sure they will scour?
I feel a little better about the tractor after playing most of the day with it. It did everything correct. Has a issue with the governor hunting a little when going in high gear.

Regards,
 Chris

I have seen far worse.  Clean all the grease and oil off and try buffing the paint and she might come out looking pretty nice.  The fenders look solid and it's not all banged up - hard to find like that!

Yea the key has a piece of metal bolted to it. Maybe so it did not get lost or easier to turn it??? That may come off soon?
I did take the spinner knob off. I did not grow up with these and just don't care for them. I always get my arm whacked.

I have the operators book with the tractor  from the dealer about 15 miles west of me, and it has the service techs name in it, Ed Neidemyer, a neighbor and great Allis guy from Beaver Center PA. I remember Ed coming to my Dads farm to work on the WD mag and maybe the New Holland baler.

Just fired the D14 up prior to coming in for the night. Will keep testing on it!:) Now have the choke rod loosened and moving correctly. Just need to get that happy starting combo of choke and throttle.
I know the D17 doesn't like much if any choke.

 Chris

Sugarmaker

Congrats, what a great purchase.  Looks to be in great shape for its age.

My fathers 1957 D17 had the same style loader, frames and hoop over the gas tank.  The lower frame step made for easy access.  Your pictures brought back many memories.  I tripped that loader bucket many many times loading the manure spreader at the "pile"

Thanks for posting.........Good luck with your project

Randy, Leadoff, Folks,
Thanks! Yes that loader frame is a great step up or down! I was surprised that the tractor actually did not steer too bad with the push blade and loader. Yes I had some flash backs from days cleaning free stalls 4 foot deep with a WD45 that type loader and no power steering. No wonder Dad let me drive it! It took some of the sand out of me for sure!

Guys,
Thanks! I do stupid stuff once in a while. The nick on the finger will be better a year from now and a long way from the heart.
The D14 got attention most of the day yesterday. We had rain on and off.

So on starting most of the time I hit the key and it turns over about 1/8 of a rev and stops, hit the key again and same thing. about the third time, (and these are weak turns) it cranks over good and fires up! I wonder if the timing is off a little?? Will have to check that? Once running she sounds fine.

So I pulled a spark plug, it was a MotorCraft. I picked up a set of Autolite 295's and installed them.
Filed the points cleaned the rotor contact, and checked inside of the cap. It wouldnt start!
Points did not look good. Back to NAPA for a free hat, condenser, points, rotor, and dust cover. Installed all but the dust cover, the cap would not set down into it (new smaller size??) She fired right up. (but still doing that hard start thing.

Next I drained the oil and removed the filter. Yep the vertical tube was stuck in the filter. Had to use vice grips to pull it out. Gently tapped it back into the filter base. Added 5 quarts of NAPA 10W30. Good to god for a while. The oil was very black!

Pulled the hood panel off the left side. Found that a new exhaust manifold gasket has been installed. I have a feeling this engine may have been freshened sometime in the not to distant past. it runs really good and I have seen no indication of smoke at and speed, or when revving. Well that's a good thing, because You just never know and a bad engine was not really a project I was look forward too!

Next we sprayed it down with a couple cans of Gunk foamy, which by the way is not the one you want to use the can says the original Gunk is way better for heavy grease. Proceeded to let that soak and the pressure washed about 70% of the grease and grime off the tractor. Still for sure looks like a old tractor!:)
Opps, have a leak some where in the rad area after hitting the rad with the pressure washer! Probably not the smartest thing I have done recently!

Put it back together about dark and then turned to the two bottom plow. She is rough!
Flap disk to clean up whats left of the plow points. Get them less jagged. Then rolled the torch over and heated up some nuts to adjust the coulters where I think they should be.
I dont know how my Dad farmed for 50 years without a set of torches on the farm!

Also noted that someone added the attachment point for a top link.

Regards,
 Chris

Yes I am looking for a couple parts:
 Left fender
 Left side panel
 Tach and cable.
 Air cleaner to carb hose
Grill (mine is functional but has issues
Grill surround (again mine is functional but has had some dings and dents.

I still have your Tach in the D17!

I have a similar issue with the starter on the 170. I am certain there is a way to test it short of taking it in for a checkup. I believe the battery load tester is used to check current draw while cranking.

Tested the ground to the starter and seems ok? I keep thinking pour ground?? Just havent found that yet. Ok I havent taken it apart and cleaned it either. But battery to starter shell shows good ground? Maybe just a weak starter??
Where are the experts??

you know our 14 always had starting issues and we used to say the same thing about timing then one day the starter housing just broke. Couldn’t locate a housing so bought a new starter and it’s like a totally different tractor. Starts fine now.

Could very well be a weak starter.  That is where I would start.
AGCO still has the air cleaner to carb hose.
Replacing some sheet metal on an original tractor doesn't help unless you find pieces that are original as well.  Most have been repainted at some point in time and will clash with the original appearance of the tractor.  Dents and dings are very common on the grille screen and surround.  I would leave it the way it is.  Those are battlescars of an original paint 60 year old tractor, they tell a story.  I have 3 original D14s, they all have a few dents and dings.  If I go replacing panels, I would have to restore the tractor so everything is one color.

Mike, DSeries4, Folks
Yes this seems to me to be a weak starter issue. When it catches on the third try it spins pretty good, and starts.
I did try the timing and it sounds a little better (adjusting by ear only) but it did not improve the starting at all. Its warm now and it may be OK, but when stuck in a snow drift at zero its not a good thing! I started it a couple times tonight and same thing wasnt sure it was going to start till the third try.
It is still on the list to change to 12 volt negative ground and add a Denso 12 volt alternator someday too.

I agree on the panels, hard to match that faded Persian orange. Yes the grill shell is not too bad compared to some i have had and seen. This is the first tractor that I have gotten that is actually original in decals and paint.

Just itching to get that two bottom plow hooked up. Our plow day is a month away and would like to have this there and set up ready to go. I would take off the loader. Can you even run the plows with the loader cylinder connected?
Regards,
 Chris

Chris, if you're going to use that plow in a month you better get busy! Looks like the lift arm links are rusted tight, they could b e set ok, or not. I like to be able to adjust things. Can't see the beaming screw in your picture, guessing it may be stuck too. The bottoms look like they will clean-up with a good wire brushing then a flap wheel and finally, lots of dirt!

Here's a shot of mine, different bottoms than yours. Mine are 24's, think yours are 124's?

I hope you are right about the engine. I thought the one in my WD was decent, and then I checked the crank bearings when I went in to change the oil pan gasket, and here I am 2 years later with the engine still in pieces everywhere in my shop. You may not want to look, haha.

I'm jealous of the torch, too. I've had one on my list for a while and need to bite the bullet. It opens a lot of new doors, just like getting a welder, or a hydraulic press... So many new things you can tackle that you just can't without items like those.

Mike, Ted, Folks,
Mike I am starting to lube the threads. The center thread is free and works good. (beaming adjustment). The side adjusters are free on one end of each, but would like to get them all working so we can fine tune the plow in the field.
Picked up a couple more aggressive flap discs for the 4.5 inch grinder. I just need to get them outside, due the amount of dirt and dust it makes! Worried about keeping the shop clean which it is not very!

I did not look at the book yet but have aligned the coulter to be just about the same place as the leading edge of the shin? I have to look at the book for some reason 331 ( I think is listed as the plows) But that may be the type of frame??

Ted, I will get some shots of the blade mount. Not sure if this is a Allis attachment? But it does have orange paint on it.
Do you mean the Ford Barn site?

Was this a Allis blade or just painted orange??

Play Farmer thanks!

John, You need to get a set of torches. Another tool not used ever day but man they can save a ton of work and busted knuckles on this old stuff.

Was just thinking I could  put these two bottoms plows on the D17 to shine them up!
The book I got with the plows is for a "62" or "63" three bottom. So I dont know what bottoms are on this two bottom. Seems the old guy bought a set of three bottoms and maybe couldn't pull them with the D14?
Regards,
 Chris

GSTROM99,
Ok I am not a electrical expert on these. But "do not" touch the wire going to the field side of the generator.
Tractor is off:
Briefly touch the Armature contact to the Battery contact on the voltage regulator. Small quick spark is all your looking for.
If its going to work it should start to show + charge when rev'ed up on the amp meter.

Chris, I set coulters 1/2 to 3/4" to the landside. Read that in one of the manuals, seems to work ok so I stay with it.

Mike,
I read that in the book too. So land side would be toward the "land " that your turning over correct?
I will have to see once I get them shined up with the flap wheel and get them hooked up to a tractor.
Thanks!

Chris, Glad you got the D-14. Looks like a nice addition to your collection. Is the coolant leak in the radiator? Maybe not all bad to find a leak as was probably a weak spot any way and may have let loose at a more inopportune time. Enjoy your new friend.

ac,
It turned out it was just water running out of the front of the lower frame. So I dodged a bullet on that for a little while. Probably would be a good idea to flush and refill the rad too. Water in it looked kind of brown when I did check the drain port.

I will have to see once I get them shined up with the flat wheel and get them hooked up to a tractor.
Thanks!

Yes, toward the left as you're looking at the plow from behind it. I have played with this setting quite a bit trying to get a nice clean furrow slice. Still not there yet! I think the sharpness of the shin area has an effect on this too.

Have fun plowing with the old girl, take some pics for us.

Maybe I'm the only guy that actually likes the seating position on a 45?

Mike,
I may complain about the ergonomics of a WD series but after spending endless hours on them, they are like a old shoe and fit very well too!
I am not crazy about a Farmall M, just too high and wide open.

Chris

Chris, that must be it, the old shoe thing. Grew up on a WD, learned to drive on that old tractor. They are just second nature to me I guess.

I hear a lot of drivers of other color tractors complain about getting on/off of WD's and 45's and saying that they are hard on the back. I must be impervious to that. I've put in some pretty long days plowing with my 45's and my back never seemed to suffer.

Folks,
So the D14 let me down and would not start with out a 12 volt jump! I am ready to work on some things. I think the first order is to remove the starter and have it checked. It should spin this over better on 6 volts than it does. After that trial, if its no better, a 12 volt battery, coil and alternator might be just the ticket to make this a good functioning tractor!
Regards,
 Chris

The starter is usually the culprit when it doesn't want to start nor spin over very well.  Usually just a kit will set it straight.  Bushings for the ends of the armature, brushes and new springs.
Thanks for the pics of the front plow.  That gives me some ideas.  No, I don't think that was ever made by Allis.  At least I have never seen one.  I would think it was just painted orange or they used orange parts to build it.
Take care and ONE of these days we'll see some spring,,,,,,,,,,I HOPE!  Still cold here and they are saying more snow in the offing...

Ted J said (Thanks for the pics of the front plow.  That gives me some ideas.  No, I don't think that was ever made by Allis) Ted there is pictures of one in the loader parts manual for the 400&500 series loader and the models 8,9,10,14,15,17,90,100,100A.100B,140,150&170. Also I've not seen one either

Kenny, Ted, Allis Folks,
Thanks! So it is a Allis dozer blade. I am not familiar with the 400-500 series loaders. But the pictures you show really looks like you nailed it.
That helps with the back story on the tractor and equipment too.
Having a loader tractor in the family was one of my attractions to this unit. Second was the fact that I might be able to use it to plow the drive next winter, maybe easier than with the Ford Jubilee and back blade. Ok we had snow the last two days but not enough to plow.
I do need to pull the starter and check it for function. The D14 did start on its own twice last night but only after several grunts of the starter. So I think you guys are pointing me in the right direction on the root cause. Where is a good place to order the components such as brushes for the starter?
On the charging system I do see it show charge (maybe 5 -8 amps) when reved up. When at idle it shows a little discharge, (about -3).
Regards,
 Chris

6 volt starters need PERFECT battery, wiring and connections... think welding cable size NOT skinny car size. Starter should be pulled off, inspected, maybe new brushes and bearings. Check pinion for chewed teeth. Odds are it's original and never been serviced.
I 'cheated', put 12v batteries and CS130 alternators in all 3 D-14s here. Yes, they spin a tad faster but after a new ring gear 'Troy' is very happy.
While 6V is original, going 12v allows cheap lights, winches, boosting others, etc.

8 amps is kinda low but gennys were an 'all day' recharge device...

Play Farmer,
Yes I am looking for a couple parts:
 Left fender
 Left side panel
 Tach and cable.
 Air cleaner to carb hose
Grill (mine is functional but has issues
Grill surround (again mine is functional but has had some dings and dents.

I still have your Tach in the D17!

Regards,
 Chris

Chris,
I finally got back over to where my parts tractor is, unfortunately I don't have a thing you need.
Looking it over yesterday it looks like it has one good rim then it might be time to send what's left to the scrap yard. She's been pretty well buzzard picked.

Play Farmer,
Thanks for checking. I really picked over a WD frame till I had to send it to the scrap yard too!
Folks,
After looking at the two bottom set of plows that came with the D14, I see they are 16 inch. Have to shine the outside plow up and try to do some plowing soon.

Chris

Folks,
Well it has been a long time since an update on the D14.
It has not started well for a year and a half. Finally a friend came over and helped me remove the starter, clean all the terminal connections. I took the starter apart, shined the commutator cleaned it and re assembled. While in there we removed about 2 gallons of mouse nests and debris from around the fly wheel and clutch. Cleaned up the ground surfaces of the starter to the bell housing area.
Replaced the starter and it starts like new tractor on 6 volts.
Then removed the generator gave it the same clean up inside and out and cleaned connections too.
Polarized the generator and seemed to have a good charge on the battery.
I want to use this D14 for snow plowing, if we get some?
Last year I put new tires on the front about the time of the first snow storm.
A week ago I was so happy with this tractor starting I thought it should have the seat re-done. We removed the cushions. Then had to cut the 1/2 inch dia seat pin to get the pan off the tractor. Cleaned the seat pan in the Electrolysis tank for several days. Today I removed it from the tank, wire brushed it, sanded, sandblasted and primed it. The upholstery shop has some white pleated vinyl for the center portions of the seat.  A pretty good match.
I hope to have this seat done in a couple weeks. I can still move the tractor setting on the seat frame.
We built a new mini shop this year for most of our tractors. It matches the look of the big shop. At 24 feet wide x 32 feet deep. I have 9 tractors and a bunch of small equipment in there too. Really nice to have these out of the big shop. Hope to get back to the CA project too.
Regards,
 Chris and Cheryl

Macon,
 Sent you a PM. Thanks.
It is a good old tractor!

Folks,
I did get the two cushion supports back from the upholstery shop. Put one through the E tank and the big one is in there now. A little welding and sandblasting and they should look and work almost as good as new.

 Chris

Mike you're not the only guy, I'm with ya!  I don't really like how my D17 seat is.  If the seat is down, it is just plain uncomfortable!  If it's up, it's just a little too far for me.  Just plain awkward for me.
Sat in the 45 from sunup til sundown during the spring and summer months.  Just time out for dinner.  I would get out of milking too if I was out in the field! Big smile

Thanks! I dont have a plan to restore the D14. Unless I really run out of things to do later in life? The D14 worked well plowing snow in our first big storm!

Tadams,
Cost and land dimensions issues were a couple of my restrictions.  Yes they are never big enough!
Very glad to off load the big shop. I do have too many big orange toys!

Here is the 32 in the big shop living room,

Just worked on a small whitetail deer using the jib crane.

We have been making maple confections in the shop kitchen:
