I could not find a previous discussion so I am asking the board.  All the manuals I have seen (which are old) tells me to use 20W oil in transmission and hydraulics but other owners here abouts say "us AW 32 " .  You guys know more than this bunch of rednecks down here so I need to know which one to use.  Thanks,

Billy Ray

Neither. Use modern trans/hydraulic oil which is a 10W-30. John Deere HyGard----Case/IH HyTran-----AGCO PermaTran or 821 XL....etc,etc.

AW 32 is kind of thin. Basically a 10 wt oil... AW 46 is a 20wt oil... Those are normally used in Skid Steer tractors of some brands... The old reliable Universal Tractor Fluid, as the Dr said, is a good farm tractor trans / hydraullic oil, and can be used in some construction machinery.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

So having grown up with 80-90W gear oil in everything from transmissions to rear ends to final drives as gospel, is it really ok to just substitute universal hydraulic fluid in all the same?

Years and years ago, I had a customer that bought DTE 13, and DTE 26 by the barrel for his construction equipment.

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

The old ALLIS B had gear lube in the transmission / differential for a couple years untill they added hydraulics... Starting 75 years ago they put 20 wt oil in the gear box, so YES it does work... My 1989 F250 had a heavy ZF 5 speed manual transmission that used ATF oil... Normally you use gear lube in the final drive boxes ( I  do)... but some are even using UTF in the finals... I believe some CAT construction machinery is doing that.

600 HP AGCO Challenger tractors use this modern oil all thru the tractor including the final drives.

I always have the same "gut" feeling you need a thick "goo" that will stay on the gears. But all the modern stuff runs on the thin stuff. Having been a hillside farmer running crawler from a by gone time. Evan Cat in the 60's-70's said run lite oil in the old 1940'a-50's transmissions and finals. I never did go that way in mine. But use the cheap yellow bucket in the old stand alone hydraulics on the crawler. But I don't have extreme cold as only gets below 20 a few hours a year at most and 99.9% of the time comes up over 32 every day.

The original poster never said just what tractor he is running. I would guess the older the tractor the heavy oil would of been the choice when new. (before 1940)

When we sold them we used the NON DETERGENT SAE 20 oil.  I even remember putting a post here - long time ago - to use SAE 20 NON DETERGENT oil.
Since then I have been "educated"  The oils they are referring to here are more state of the art and work well in the B-C rear end.
Good Luck!

you don't say which tractor but.....
I've used SAE30 for the engine, Universal Tractor Oil for hydraulics, tranny, rearend
in my D-14s for 2 decades. Makes it simple to remember, both from WallyWorld.
OK, maybe not ok by the 'correct cops', but my tractors see limited use and after 50 years ANY oil is good oil for the beasties !
