Stuck on Old Westerns from the past . Wants to play cowboy games evidently , might be the big ring lever action of the Riflemen firearm for next question

that question is more dead than alive... McQueens mareleg was an 1892 sawed off rifle that was 44-40 caliber... set in the 1870's era... and the bullets in his cartridge loops were 45-70... Try stuffing them in that 1892 set back in the 1870's...LOL Sumptin don't smell write...

44-40 was produced to compliment the 44-40 handguns of the day, lost favor shortly after developed to 45 colt and 45 Long Colt as were more dependable and longer range for the odd powders of again the day. 45-70 was a longer distance cartridge with harsh knockdown inertia but also a hard kicking pain in the shoulder that could not have been Pistol Fired adequately. I have owned both 45 LC and 45-70 neither of which was all too effective for my needs and no longer have, old Cowboy guns. Uncle fired five 45LC(Handgun) cartridges at a charging bear, ONE of which entered the animals Eye Socket and dropped her where was under 30 yards away, the other four were found to have been deflected by her massively thick skull lodging beneath her head hide. A later hunt with a 30.06 he dropped a charging Brown at 55 yards (stepped off) with a single shot penetrated the skull and destroyed the animals brain. The 45-70 had to be Lobbed in as was such a dramatically fast dropping 400gr slug, barely exceeding 1600fps muzzle and arriving most times at closer to 900fps at target. Bullet drop at 300 yards is Over 3 feet.

Dmiller I am not criticizing you,but your statement on the 44/40 cartridge is the other way around. 44/40 was developed for the 1873 Winchester Rifle being more powerful and a centerfire versus the Henry rimfire cartridge. Both Smith and Wesson and Colt built pistols later in 44/40 when the popularity of the cartridge was established. 45 long Colt was introduced in 1872 as a more powerful cartridge and developed for the Army to use in the Colt Single Action Army Pistol.

44/40 killed a lot of critters until Winchester introduced the 30/30!

The 45-70 shines around 200 yards or more shooting things like chunks of fire wood. The 30/06 or 300 W/ mag make it shake a little when hit. Those 405- 500 grainers out of the 45-70 will make it spin 20ft backwards— lol. Older generation at our club always said they start building speed @ the 200 yard bank. Just cleaned the bores on a few ‘86 winchesters and (2) trapdoors getting ready for our thanksgiving get together. After shooting the shotguns, pistols, and hi-power riffles, go to the 45-70’s to finish the day!

The rifle used in Wanted Dead or Alive was made for that TV series. In reality a pistol would be easier to handle. Research on firearms used in the Old West showed most Lawmen used a Shotgun or a Lever Action Rifle.Pistol was third choice. The "Mares Leg" looked cool and Steve McQueen became the "King of Cool".Myself I preferred The Rifleman as he had a better theme song!

The Duke used a Similar Winchester in many of his films to the Rifleman Weapon, Enlarged Ring Cocking lever, very common in most of his Western movies including True Grit, El Dorado, Rio Bravo. Swing cocking was not really useful but a few of those were gunsmith modified to that long ago.

Here you are again if you just would of googled it. You would not of had to explain what STEVO you where asking about. Would not got off track talking about which caliber was first or better.
But you sure did make some good laughs for all the old guys.
