Howdy WD45,
I can't answer your question but, I have seen a AC  4W305 with a cummins in. Sure changes the look of it. You lose your pipes coming out the top of the hood and this big, big exhaust pipe comes outside the cab on the right side. Me myself like the old NOS like.

Thanks Kurzy

An 8.3 is more suitable for a 426 replacement in a 7580/4W220. to replace the 731 I would suggest at least an L10 if not an 855.

Kevin from Alabama, who posts on here, has a 4W 305 with a cummins in it. If he sees this, He'd probably give you some steps in the right direction.

Has anyone heard of putting a N14 in one?

No, but if you can do 855, then you can do n-14

Since the N14 is the latest 855 DUH!

I just thought the N14 was rated with more power, but I know it has more electrical to it and didn't know how one would work.

I guess I'd prefer using the Cummins L10 (10 liter) or M11 (11 liter) as both are 305 HP or more and would weigh less and be shorter/smaller/easier to fit and would match radiator capacity better than a larger displacement engine such as the 855/N14.

I've got a lot of respect for the M11.  I drove a log truck with a 444 cummins, little tired and poorly tuned, i'm sure, but a buddy drove a truck with a M11 with a drop axle and would run circles around me on some of the big hills around here

My neighbors had a 4W 305 with an 855 in it. I think the 855 has more torque than the tractor really was designed for. Theirs spent a little more time getting trans/dropbox repairs than they really wanted.  I have an 855 in a blue versatile and so far it has been an excellent engine. The M11 probably wouldn't have the torque, and might be a little gentler on the driveline. The M11 can make a lot of power, too.
This is what they sound like with a straight pipe. My wife says it sounds angry.
