Have a new to me 7020. Everything seems to work fine for an old tractor. Have been using it for tillage the last month so other than hydraulics and draw bar, haven't done much else. Hooked to a fertilizer buggy yesterday, and the 540 PTO didn't seem to be running fast enough at rated rpm. I know I need to put a tach on the pto, but is there anything that I should be looking for? PTO brake works, and engages fine. Doesn't seem to slip but haven't had it hooked to anything that needed a lot of torque. Planning on using it on a baler this year, so want to make sure it's all A-OK when the time comes.

Interesting. Yeah, if you have access to a tachometer, by all means check it out. It's either correct, or slipping. And if it's slipping on a fertilizer spreader, it's slipping something awful. Gear ratio is gear ratio.
I don't know enough about modifications guys do for making pullers......might be somebody messed with the gearing somehow, but sort of doubt it. Don't even know if that would ultimately affect PTO speed or not.

99.5% sure there's nothing wrong with the PTO. It will only run 610-620 RPM at full throttle.

What makes you think it's running slow Wbenchfarms?

If someone installed the wrong size belt or pulley on the alternator, that could affect the speed your tach shows in the dash. You may not be running the engine as fast as you think. My 7020 doesn't run as fast as the tach in the dash show. Just a thought. Leon B Mo

Fertilizer didn't seemed to be spreading as wide of a pattern on the 7020 like it did on the other tractor. Driveshaft looked like it was turning slower. Wide open throttle is not much more than where I am running at 2200, so I think the tach is correct.

WOT is around 2500 on my 7000. I'd imagine the spec would be similar on a 7020? I'd get a strobe tach and check it against the instrument panel before making any adjustments.

What is the "other" tractor ?? A 190XT turns 680 RPM at full throttle and that's 10% faster than a 7020.

Am I the only one that runs 540 equipment at.......540?!

Flip that shaft around to the 1000 end n that will wake it up !

Definitely get a "strobe" tach as hurst said, and be double checking engine RPMs and PTO RPMs. Darrel

I also spread fertilizer with a JD 2240 and a Zetor 9520 the same day. Going to track down a tach to check it with this weekend, but watching the drive shaft turn just looked slower to my eyes than the other 2 tractors.

I hardly ever go by the tach- just when the machine sounds good

I posted a while back that I thought my PTO speed was slow on my 7020. Finally had a chance to check both the PTO and engine speed against the tach. Dash tach at about 2350, engine speed about 2220, and PTO at 308. Definitely slow. Where do I go from here? Doesn't seem to be slipping.

Dual speed 540/1000 RPM PTO on that tractor should run 557 RPM @ 2,300 RPM engine speed when on the 540 shaft. Either your tachometer is reading slow or your PTO clutch is slipping. PTO clutches on those tractors are normally bullet-proof. I've repaired two in 40 years. One was new and had a flaw in the clutch cover casting and the other was a plugged hay grinder...not the fault of the tractor. There are no wrong gears that can be installed. Either a terrible reading tachometer or your clutch is slipping badly.

I'd check the spreader. Some of them can run 540 or 1000. They flip the drive belts to a different set of pulleys to keep the spinners at the same speed. If it's set for 1000, but has a 540 shaft, it's going to do what you say its doing. AaronSEIA

Well, yes, it depends on the implement. But I would say, I run several things slower than 540, such as unloading wagon, elevator as you mentioned. Also do not run manure spreader full speed, I mean, why? To throw it farther? Not an important consideration for me. We have also NEVER run a small square baler at 540, got the rhythm in my head, but couldn't tell you actual RPM, definitely slower than 540.
Forage choppers, blowers, round balers, etc., run at 540. I guess that's because most of the tractors I grew up on had the PTO mark on the tach where WOT was anyway. My big Allis will "overspeed", and the tach doesn't work anymore, usually put it where it sounds right, not quite wide open. I suppose the chopper might run a little faster now days....it's a 1000 RPM unit, tach hasn't worked since before we bought it, want to fix that dang tach one of these days.

If the transmission were changed out from a power shift to a power direct or vice versa, would that change the ratio of the PTO as well as the ground speed? Because is does change the actual ground speed, correct? Leon B Mo

Which transmission makes no difference in PTO gearing.

most balers [small] are rated at plunger strokes per minet not pto rpm
