working on a series 1 D17. I need to replace the seals on the power director shifter shaft (both sides) I have never done it before but from what I read on here from an older post it doesn't sound too difficult. Are the o-rings in a groove on the shaft or in a groove in the case? Any pointers anyone can give will be much appreciated.

be careful not to slide the shaft out to far on either side or you might lose the keyways in the shaft that operates the power director clutch just did my d 19 took about 15 min

I always have a little compressed air and blow everything off make sure it’s free dirt. Lube your O-rings up a little bit before sliding back in to housing

On an old D-17 of that age, you'll have to remove the cover on the right side and remove the setscrew on the inside that retains the clutch fork. There are no keys on this tractor. After the hand lever is removed on the outside and the setscrew removed on the inside, you can slide the shaft back and forth an inch to replace the Orings.
