If it has a knob/lever you can turn, it can be white for field work and red for road travel. Might even be a position for OFF, but I don't remember that.

Just out of curiosity,  what does a light switch (on the dash) on a series 3 '17 look like ? Is it the rotary type like the 100 series ? Our series 2 had a simple "pull" switch for the lights, similar to the WD LOLLOL . I can't recall a "red" light/bulb on the rear fender of the '17 though Ouch.

The one on the series 3 is just a push pull type but is all metal maybe 3/16 with a teat on the end not plastic like the 45s

D-17's Series 3 and 4 had a "combination work and red tail light" as standard equipment. Series 3 behind the seat and Series 4 on the rear of the left fender. Older D-17's had two red tail lights on the fenders as I remember it.

Were they the "bullet" type of red lights by any chance ?? I vaguely recall a bullet/torpedo shaped red light on the fender of the WD Smile. Seems like the D 15 had a red bulb inside of the rear work light but I don't recall how it worked from work to "road" use ??

I had a WD with a work light under the seat.  You could reach it sitting on the seat.  Turn it one way it turned red, turn it the other way it was white.  Off in the middle.  It was a rotary switch not the toggle type.

Yes but you are talking about the switch being on the light housing itself and not the switch on the dash and that's how I remember certain D series being.
