November seems to be the month for breakdowns on the family farm. I think (I mean I hope) I have the issue figured out, but I will gladly take some advice.

We have an Allis 8070 FWA with a power director transmission. Love the tractor, and today might be the day the girl has given me major problems. 

Today I changed out the filters and fluids to get the tractor ready for winter and the next season. This means I dropped the transmission fluid, and changed the filter up under the radiator also. The fluids were changed 750 hours ago, and I like to take care of the tractors. Needless to say the hydraulic oil in the transmission looked fine, and there was hardly any fillings or slug on the bottom plate. 

We topped everything off and used the tractor for around 2 hours today. I ended up using the power director electronic shifter next to the steering wheel and that is when things went south. Originally you could hear the gear nocking against another gear, and it eventually found the sweet spot and worked fine. 

Curious as to what happened, I decided to try it again. Same problem. When I down shifted the knocking in the transmission went away, and I even drove it around the farm to make sure. Fast forward 10 minutes later (trying the electronic PD a few more times) and the problem got louder and worse. Now when I let out the clutch, you can hear the gears knocking into one another. When you step in the clutch the problem goes away. 

So I am wondering since the PD is electronic if the solenoid has gotten weak, and it does have the power to push the gear into place anymore. 

I have no clue if this is how the PD works on the 8070. I had a problem similar to this on my electronic 4x4 where the motor wouldn't disengage fully because it was getting weak.

I have included a video so you can hear the noise. It makes the noise in any gear when I first started having the problem. The tractor would still drive just fine. I could again downshift the PD and the noise went away at first. Now it is constant with the tractor stationary in park. I can step in the clutch, and the noise goes away. The hydraulics work fine on the tractor (I checked.) I am hoping this is not a major internal problem, since everything worked fine earlier until the PD electronic shifter was used. 

I do want to add there have been times in the last year where I would try and use the electronic PD shifter, and it would not shift or do anything. It acted like there was a short in the wire. Eventually it would shift and work.

Has anyone else ever had this happen on an 8000 series? 

 

Would anyone be able to provide insight on the gear that had teeth break on it? I am always a curious guys, and was wondering what the gear actual went to? Did it run the low side of the transmission? Was its job to transfer power from the engine to another part of the transmission? The reason I am curious is because it looked like it bolted up to something. 

Are teeth breaking off normal in this transmission? We have had the tractor for 8 years, and use it mainly to pull a 24 foot disc 3 inches in the ground which I thought it could handle on hilly ground in western Iowa.
