My story (short version)-
I own a 40 acre forested parcel bordered on 3 sides by National Forest.  The sw corner and se corner are marked by pins the feds put in (along a section line).  I've had a general idea where the ne and nw corners are, but not really sure.
Now, the Feds are informing me they intend to log the 40 north of me (among others).  I'd like to make sure they stay on their side of the line, but I need to know, after 55 years of ownership, exactly where the line is.
My  first question is... Is there a relatively reasonably priced instrument that can give me accurate readings in longitude and latitude, in order to find my "not for sure" corners?
My second question (pun intended) is... At 46 degrees N, how long (as in distance on the ground) is a "second"?
     Thanks in advance.

Probably pretty soon one of the smarter ones on here will answer the "second" question but I think any GPS will give you the coordinates of where you are standing and which direcction to go to get to the coordinates you choose.

you or the State needs to have a VERIFIED SURVEY to prove the point.. Not your GPS.

I agree here!  If you do it, then it is your word, and their word.  Get it done correct, save yourself a BIG issue, and pay a few bucks.

Well ..'they' should have a real good, uptodate, accurate, bonefied SURVEY being 'national' land all around you.... They should give you a copy of it,so you can go find the 'markers' at all the corners of the land.....
BTW there's no GPS ( aside from milatary grade) that will be accurate.

from a legal perspective the boys are right, you need a certified survey done. That said, surveys are expensive. The first thing I would do is buy or borrow a good GPS and use it to see if you can find any pins or stone markers. GPS should get you pretty darn close to finding them, if they exist. borrowing a metal detector might help. If the Feds are logging, they or the loggers should have their ribbon markers up by now. If your "unofficial" survey agrees with them, problem solved. If not, then you need to hire a surveyor.

yea, the GPS will get you within 6 ft or so... If you dont have "too many" trees in that strip then its not a big deal.... you could put up a few posts along where you THINK the line is and see if they stay on their side.. If they think you are off 50 ft then THEY need to get a survey done. ........ working for the STATE i would ASSUME they had everything marked before hand ?

Find your line then spray a red dot on every tree that is on the border on your side.  If they cut any, they pay to replace it with a like tree.  Loggers are not likely to encroach when they know the costs.

Not US Forestry but the Neighbor at Salem, decided was time to Log where marked a Line for himself well onto BILs place We had a survey and had located Iron Rods during the survey(Truck Axles) we had placed when initially surveyed.  So we Re-marked the line with Purple NO TRESPASS Paint.  logger came in supposedly had BIG Argument as to the line as to the Purple Paint then the neighbor tried to pull the Iron Stakes.  Bad Choice as another neighbor that also relied on those markers caught him.  Far as I know that fight is STILL in court between those two, BIL lost NO trees.  Been surveyed five times I am aware and Iron Rods are STILL The Corners, the Idjit is determined to get that changed but nobody has helped his efforts.
