It refers to the speed of the PTO at rated engine RPM. 540 RPM at whatever the rated engine speed is. The 540 PTO shaft will have 6 splines, and be 1-3/8" in diameter. Then there is the 1,000 PTO, it turns at a speed of 1,000 RPM, and comes in two sizes the "small", which is 1-3/8" and has 21 splines, or the "large", which is 1-34" in diameter, and has 20 splines.

On any D-17 when the engine is running 1650 RPM the PTO (when engaged) is running approximately 540 RPM.

Ok, but how can you tell when running at the rpm that makes 540 PTO?( Is it wide open throttle?) thanks Matt 👍

That is what the tachometer is for on the instrument panel. Wide open throttle (on a correctly adjusted D-17) is 2,000 RPM which is 665 RPM pto speed.  540 RPM is very important for square balers, sickle mowers, corn pickers, etc.  A forage blower or forage chopper is always run at full throttle.

Hmmmm, I ran my sickle mower last year on the d17 ( which had occasional cutting issues)so with a dirty gas tank/ carburetor...
Makes me wonder if that was the issue because I did not have the proper PTO speed...
So a sickle mower should run at 540?

Everything is built to run at 540.  Depending on the load, that may only be 1650 engine rpm, or it may be full throttle with the governor doing the work.

In the case of a square baler or sickle mower, slower than 540 isn't bad, but not as productive. TOO FAST shakes things apart  !!!!!

Okay my next chore is to get my tachometer reading correctly again then. Any tips on doing this or is it pretty straightforward?

Dad used the shaft tack and guaged the quadrant on the WD for combining and bar mowing. Remember him yanking the throttle open when a slug was heading for the cylinder on the 90.

I think I bought a new tachometer and a couple other gauges a while ago when I first bought the d-17 and meant to put new gauges on it but then got consumed with other projects oh, so I think it's just a matter of taking the old out and putting the new in and hopefully (knock on wood it just works!)

If you are running something that needs the HP, you need to run as close to 540 as you can. Speeds below that are at reduced HP from the engine. If the tractor has plenty of HP and run at reduced speed, you put more stress on the driveline because you have to have increased torque to get the required HP.

So the tach works mechanically connected to something else ( are the cables always bad, or just good to replace when doing the gauge so it's more accurate?)

Tachometer cables have nothing to do with accuracy. They are just a means to locate the tachometer away from the engine to where the Operator is. They last for many years as a rule, but if you going to use an old one, I'd sure hang it from something up high to stretch it out straight and drizzle some kind of oil/penetrating oil down inside to lube it up before using it.
