To those of you that take your VEHICLES in to a dealer/car wash place/corner independent shop with a "COUPON", how much do they upcharge above the "5 Qt" small print ?? I run a 5.4 Ford and purchase my supplies at Walmart for $32( 10 qts of 5/20 conventional and a GENUINE MOTORCRAFT filter) and this engine takes/holds 7 qts Confused. I've seen adds on tv for a $28 oil change Ouch, how can they do it unless the "overage qts" make up their loss leader ??

We bought oil in the bulk. 1/4 to 1/2 the price of qts. Oil company furnished us the tanks, meters, hoses and reels, etc. They were ours at the end of 5 years. Be advised every oil company that puts up a sign at a quick lube has 2 different grades of oil. 1 barely meets oe requirements. 1 far exceeds oe requirements. We always used the better quality. We stocked Motor craft filters and several other brands that far exceeded oe requirements. Motorcraft went on all ferd vehicle.

Company has an account with Val. . . , says 15 minute oil change, 1 car ahead of me, 5.9qts of synthetic blend 5w 20 or 30, replaced air filter also.  Drove out 1hr and 40 minutes later and a receipt for $90.

The oil change gets you in the door. Then they Up charge for air filter, belts, vacuum etc. to make the money

The "add ons" are where they make up the difference. 15 minute oil change???? I don't want some oil change flunkee rushing an oil change on my vehicle. Local tire shop has been doing most of my oil changes for over 40 years, I bring in my oil and filter and they do the change and will rotate the tires, inspect the brakes, u-joints or whatever else I request. Took a couple of my newer vehicles to the local Ford dealer for the "works" oil change, tire rotation, multi-point inspection a few times until I caught them not rotating the tires which was supposed to be part of the package. When I brought it to the service manager's attention there was no offer to bring it back in or give me a refund. I wonder what else they didn't do.  I won't be getting any more oil changes there, nor will I buy another vehicle from them.

I'm out of the dealership for good now, but I still will be doing my own changes. Part of it is I'm being a cheap a$$, and the other part is I've had to fix too many screw ups because most places only pay peanuts for lubies so they usually don't have good help.

I just happened upon a shop, due to a coupon $19.95 for a 5 qt synthetic oil change.  My Tundra takes almost 7.  I took my own oil and filter and they changed it for $19.95.  Price didn't bother me.  I didn't have to do it and I didn't have to deal with the old oil!  It was a bargain as far as I was concerned.

They do use bulk oil that is a lower grade than typical, supposedly!  Anything over 5 qt.s is probably mighty costly per qt. and it's the same inferior oil.

I gladly pay the local 'oil change' shop to do my 97 F150, something like $30. Idiot Ford 'engineers should have to  do the job...can't get filter off without oil ALL over the frame AND you need to jack it up to crawl under to get there. Put bifocals on to see, be missin 2 discs and you can see why I let someone else do it.... I put less than 3000 miles per year, even less since CV19 .

It is difficult for me to pay someone to do work I can do myself.
On the few occasions I have had someone else change oil, it seems like they do not get the oil filters tight enough to not leak. Think they only tightened it enough to touch the base and that was it.  NEVER AGAIN!!!

      Take my 2018 GMC pickup to the dealer and for $49.00 get the oil, filter, windshield washer fluid and tire rotation. Never have had them "add" anything other than one time an air filter and it was dirty. I have checked to make sure I got a new oil filter and joints lubed. Have done this for 3 trucks over about 10 years and never had any problems with them. Maybe  I am just lucky but seems easier than doing it myself and not much more money. Always used to change my own oil but crawling under things isn't as easy as it was 20 years ago. Getting up again is even more difficult.

I have been changing my own oil for 50 years.. At first it was the price... and the convenience.. Now i could easily afford to pay someone, but the time involved to get to the dealer, stand in line, then drive home.... I can change the oil in any of the cars or truck in 15- 20 minutes ......... and i use the waste oil for burn piles, and lube for the sickle mower.

I have learned over years that many ‘jiffy lube’ style oil changes do two things almost every time;
1 they don’t lube the chassis
2 they put in just enough fresh oil to be a hair above the low mark. That being said, if I’m in a bind for time and have a vehicle way past due for a change, 9 out of ten times, the next day I add a quart up to full.

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

The other thing that drives me up a wall, other than making the oil change a race, is they usually now suck the oil out through the dipstick at a lot of places. Lot faster than climbing under and taking out the plug, no chance of stripping or overtightening, and don't need a pit in the shop. BUT, you don't actually get the junk out of the bottom of the pan, I am very particular and dump a half can of Sea Foam down the oil fill with the plug out to flush the bottom of the pan and last bit of old oil. I also let it drip drain for a good 10-15 min. Would never let anyone else do an oil change for me, too important to not do it right.
