What year or tractor serial number was the tall head used on the WD? Parts book shows an engine serial number but I haven't found a tractor serial number.

That's a tough one, as many have had heads replaced over their years of service life. I know my Dad's 53 WD had battery ignition and the tall cylinder head with the newer thermostat housing. Battery ignition was effective at chassis s/n 136,718 which was a 1953 build. I think the tall cylinder head was probably in use by then at least. Sure wish I knew what Dad's s/n was.

My Grandpa's WD, serial no. 115XXX, which makes it a '52, has the tall head. As far as anyone can remember it was never off. Tractor came with a mag, I converted it to 12 volt and battery ignition.

My dad's '53 had the curved shift lever and 6 volt battery ignition, can't say for sure but I think tall head.

What engine number was listed. There is a chart on Bryan Smith's website that lists APPROXIMATE tractor numbers to engine numbers.

The "tall" head was introduced in 1951 with "engine" number WD289001.
Finding the exact "tractor" serial number might be a little difficult.
Bryan Smith assembled a correlation of engine/tractor serial numbers which can be found at this site:   http://wsmth.people.clemson.edu/SNFind/esn_tsn6.htm" rel="nofollow - http://wsmth.people.clemson.edu/SNFind/esn_tsn6.htm

1951 ENGINE SN Range:    278585-313931

1951 TRACTOR SN Range:   72328-105181

So, I'm guessing the tall head first appeared with tractor numbers in the 80000 range.

My WD with tractor number WD100853 and engine number WD309267PA has the tall head.

Yes, pin pointing the exact tractor serial number would almost be impossible. If those engine and tractor serial number ranges are accurate for 1951, there was 2,493 more engines produced in 1951 than tractors. I would assume that the extra 2,493 engines were put in combines or used for power units. Maybe even sent to a dealer if ordered.

My 1951 WD101353 w/ engine WD309752PA has the tall head. As you said it is mentioned in the book at engine SN 289000. The first WD in '51 looks to be 72328. So, my money is on AC changing to the tall head earlier in '51.

I don't know that my engine or cylinder head is original, but TomMN mentioned in my thread that it fits nicely in his chart correlating tractor and engine SNs.

From my observations over the years, the tall head started to be used on WD's in 1951 around serial number 83,xxx.
