Mom is afraid they are not gonna renew her CRP next year. FSA off says they will at this time, but are unsure about next year. Price for new ground going in is far less than she is receiving now. She wants me to get a price on seed. Between 160 and 200 acres. It's been in CRP for years. PH is good. I have used Pioneer, Northrup King, F/S, and generic. Was not real happy with Pioneer or Generic stuff. Location is South Central Iowa. Thanks Guys.

We have had good luck with Cropland alfalfa. We get it from our co-op.

My father always said to watch what the black hats in the area are planting. Seems they stay up on the best available varieties.

What is your market for 200 acres of alfalfa and how do you plan to harvest it?

Yes, they are a tighter community and work together better. I have to ask if you have the capacity to process 5 cuttings of 200 acre alfalfa as well. It takes a lot of input— fertilizer, equipment, storage, manpower etc.... it is my favorite crop though!!!

If it’s been many years laying fallow, you have a heck of a time returning to alfalfa the first year wouldn’t you? I would think the first year out of crp, would do corn?

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

We get 3 cuttings of alalfa here. It is no problem for me to run 160-200 acres of hay. At least 3 feed lots within a few miles of her farm. One of them might chop part of 1st and 3rd cutting. Thank you for the replies. She has spoken to the MFA about burn down and neighbor has offered to power drill the seed in. It works for him. This will be all in 1 field.

you might kill the existing crop with a burn down chemical, but them plants been dropping seeds for past 10 years or so and they are gonna grow too. brome took over our CRP several times, the stockholders didn't renew the contract this past yer and after burn down and a crop planted, the brome took it over again. was not a RR seed used for the crop, what a mess! and not much yield. i would use any RR alfalfa seed, it's usually about $300. a bag average.

Good idea, thanks shameless. If they turn her down on re-entering her farm, I think we will burn it down and get the guy with the power drill to put the seeding in. He's the guy that cuts and seeds most of the CRP ground in her county. MFA has the farm mapped so they will most likely do the burn down. I hope they re-enter it.
