Mike,
Check your fuel delivery and your air intake. Maybe air cleaner is pluggin' up and not getting enough air. Inspect the spark plugs to. Might need a couple new plugs. (especially if they're Champions) Few easy things to check...

Points is a good place to start, they require to be checked every 100 hours or sooner. I also had a fuel filter slowly clog over the winter last year. Drove me nuts until I saw very little fuel in the clear filter. Replaced it and she ran like a champ.

Well, interesting thing happened yesterday. Got one of my 720’s out for the first time this year. I usually use it to till my garden and run the bush hog. Yesterday while tilling the garden she sputtered about 5 minutes after I began. Came back about 5 minutes later, she started right back up for 30 seconds and shut down again. So, 2 years ago same thing happen. Replaced the fuel filter and off she went and never gave anymore issues. Same thing yesterday, replaced what appeared to be a perfectly good filter. Turned it upside down and a bunch of rust came out. Filter was mostly clogged. New filter and I finished tilling the garden, bush hogged, and used the blade to level some gravel for a patio. Simple fix

Got very lucky. Went to buy another 720 a few years ago. Had a front blade to go with it and a parts tractor that was involved in a garage fire. As I was loading it the fella surprised me and said do you want the ole bush hog that goes with it? I said absolutely, where is it? He said you walked right by it, it’s covered up under that tarp. Needless to say I was ecstatic. I brought it home, sandblasted it, and gave it a paint job. It works great mowing around my fence rows.
