I have a 7040 power shift that when shifter is high/low range and “gear” shifter is in neutral the tractor will creep forward. If you take it out of range to neutral or park it will stop but then you cannot return it to high or low without shutting tractor off. (Just grinds gears) Have tried adjusting inching but no change. Anyone have any idea what maybe going on.

Snap ring has come off of spool in valve body or some plates are warped in some clutches. MACK

I agree with Mack, snap ring gone in the valve body. It's incredibly small but important. And welcome to the forum.

Are you speaking of the spool on the modulator valve or inching valve?

Inching valve. Have to remove right fuel tank and pull the valve and disassemble to check and/or repair.

Try shifting to reverse before running the range lever.

The official way to diagnose whether it's the snap ring (or not) would be to check brake pressure in the tranny. Some of us old guys can just tell what it is without ever connecting a gauge...….

Ok so I would have to disassemble the whole valve to get to the snap ring correct? I can not remove just the plunger to get to it. Dr Allis, if it’s not the snap ring what else would you suspect?

Power Shift valve has to be removed and disassembled to replace the possible broken/missing snap ring. The inching plunger has to come out, but it is held in place by a retaining pin, so the valve has to be torn down to service it. If you have owned this tractor and all was well until one day this started happening, I'd say odds are pretty good the snap ring area is your problem. If it isn't, then I'm thinking warped plates/discs like Mack and Lynn have suggested.
