My regular machinist is 84, retired machinist but a full time farmer. I took this manifold to him a year ago but he had me come pick it up because he was too busy with other projects and at the time, wheat harvest then more bean planting. Now I can't risk taking it back to him so I decided to bolt it up to my machine and give it a go. I'm not a machinist and my Smithy isn't really big enough to do this but being 30 something degrees outside and me wanting to get the U fired up soon I took my time, measured a dozen times and cut twice. It appears I have it within .040 so the next go round there can't be an oops. Haven't had one yet but there was a lot of perspiration involved.

things one does when you have to sometimes we amaze ourselves . Was watching son the other night using one of the bridgeports in the shop - he just bought a horizontal boring head for one mill - he rebuilt a face plate for a Bobcat skid loader where the faceplate pins for boom attach . Things you never expect to use a machine for become easy with the right tools .

Slow and steady. You'll be fine. From my years as a machinist I can tell you if you think something isn't quite right, STOP AND CHECK! God gives us intuition for a reason! I ruined a few things in my career because if saying "ahh it'll be alright".

You guys are absolutely right, when it comes right down to it I finally figured out a way. Before I was stumped because with my vise on the table, everything was too tall to machine but I think Norm had machined the other side so after getting a bracket made and bolted down and a good 30 minutes of checking heights I was able to start. I machined it down to within .015 and used a file to finish it, now I will make the gaskets and go from there. I was uneasy about taking it down all the way by machine, it's just not heavy enough for this kind of work, is the cats meow for making the little bushings for riding lawnmower starters though.

Everything fit like a glove, now to get this old girl to run for the first time in over 20 years, then I'll smile.

Not yet, I've come back to the house plum out of breath a couple times from cranking. I've checked timing, rechecked timing, swapped the carb with the one off the M crawler, replaced all the plugs, even went so far as to swap the mag with the A and that's when I discovered the Mag rotates the opposite direction. For the life of me I couldn't get it in my thick head to install the wires in the correct direction. She came real close tonight but I was just tuckered out, maybe tomorrow.

Good luck with her. My 15/20 Mechormic Deering I resurrected 30 years ago needed a pull the first time I started it. It hadnt been run in 20+ years. I let it warm up good, ran it for a couple of hours around the farm, sorts blew the cobs out. After that would start the 2nd or 3rd pull on the crank.

Warmed up a little today, hooked a chain to it, had one of the girls pull it with the skid steer and she fired right up. Drove it to the neighbors house, turned around and ran out of gas 30ft from the driveway. Started it 3 times by hand since, now to re-torque and re-check valves and such. Hope my first attempt at a video works, may be kind of long bur her goes. Sure is a good feeling after all these years to hear her purr. [TUBE]0MJ98df8j_o[/TUBE]

Now, one thing, just a little thing,,,,,when you shut it off and were coming to shut the camera off, I thought you'd stick your face in the camera and say something like "tha, tha, that's all folks"
