| It’s about that time of year to start planting but before a hook up to my 330 planter with 74 units I need to do some modifications. Has anyone made any covering disc or anything to help with soil to seed contact because we are still primarily conventional tillage on our corn and emergence isn’t always the best and as high as corn seed is this is an issue that needs to be addressed any Information/advice would be helpful. |

| I know exactly what you are talking about. I had soil to seed contact issues when I was running 78 units. tbran has a fix for it that I never did get around to trying. Not exactly sure how he did it, but somehow he put some metal shoes on it beside the disks. Said it was something similar to what sunflower had on their seeding equipment. Maybe he'll see the thread and chime in. Not by the book, but put no till coulters on even if you do conventional tillage. That helped more than anything. Seemed to pulverize the soil a little bit right in the seed trench, and it flowed back in a little better. Putting drag chains on is an option. Best remedy I came up with was going to a deutz 385. Your issues are why I sold my Allis planters and went to a Deere 7200. I could never get the perfect stands with the Allis that I now have. Tom |

| Yep that's why I got a JD 7000. Ol Allis was okay in "garden soil" but not so good in iffy soil conditions. That was a decent old AC 500planter my uncle bought new. It went to the scrap yard. That was just before I found this forum. Would have gladly gave it away for a song....but I didn't know better then,sorry. |

| I did manage to find a set of the optional front mounted gauge wheels a couple years ago and that helped with depth control some just hasn’t helped with the seed to soil contact any. |

| These planter units were on a planter I bought, but haven't used. I think with all the poly/plastics available today a person could probably improve this set-up some. |

Those WORK! Promise. OR one can purchase the soil control strips off a SunFlower Drill. Anything to prevent the soil from being lifted from the trench -stick to the opener and be peeled off in a ribbon by the scrapers mounted too high and exiting the seed zone. We have also seen the scrapers lowered and made on a 90 degree to the opener. ------------- When told "it's not the money,it's the principle", remember, it's always the money.. |

That will fix the seed/soil issue - now address the plate issue - there are no graded seed anymore so this matching has to be done best you can. Also look at the hopper bottom and the wear around the edge as well as the knocker and seed tongue - address all the wear areas there - the roller should be 'floppy' - normal. ------------- When told "it's not the money,it's the principle", remember, it's always the money.. |
