As I was bush hogging today, my WD45 started knocking. Has good oil pressure. Push in on clutch it quiets down. Noise does not change with PTO engaged or disengaged. Transmission bearing? | "Push in clutch and it quiets down" ?? Does that mean the noise completely goes away?? or is just less noisy, and is still knocking some ?? If it completely goes away, shift the transmission into any gear and throw the hand clutch lever forward and then let out the foot clutch. If the noise has returned, it is not in the transmission, but is in the center torque tube section and is probably something in the upper PTO drive. |

Not the hydraulic pump, lever up lever down makes no difference in sound. Put tractor in gear, hand clutch forward makes same knocking as in neutral. Push in on foot clutch noise quiets to not noticeable. | To be sure it still isn't the hydraulics pumping, your lift arms can be lowered and stay lowered with the hand lever down, right ??? |

| So, it appears to be in the PTO drive area. There are five gears for that. I guess you start by draining the oil at the PTO box and removing the box. You can see 4 of the gears from that point. |

| Two gears are actually inside the PTO box, so start there. The next two are up inside and require hydraulic pump removal. The last one requires the tractor to be split in two at the battery box area. |

I hope it doesn't require splitting the tractor. It makes the same noise whether the PTO is engaged or not. | Whether the PTO is engaged or not, four of the five gears are always meshed and turning when the foot clutch is released. Only the very bottom sliding gear isn't meshed when PTO is disengaged. |

Well I guess I may get ridiculed for stating the obvious BUT - if it just suddenly started making the noise while bush hogging, have you checked the oil level at that fill point? I had a similar situation back a couple of years or so (and before I did a lot of work to mine last year/this spring), the PTO gearbox seal was leaking fluid and I hadn't noticed. Corrected that, all the noise stopped. OK flame away lol ------------- I need more than 200 characters for my "signature." I'd love to see that changed to 250! |

| Seems like the intermediate gear is the one that loses a tooth. I have broke 3 in 40 yrs. Last one was 2 yrs ago and it made a ticking sound at idle with PTO off. Never really knocked. |

OK, maybe I'm thinking too obvious, but could it be a broken spring in the foot clutch. Or possibly the throwout bearing getting loose on the clutch fork. Or maybe pilot bushing getting bad? ------------- Looking at the past to see the future. '53 WD, '53 WD45, WD snap coupler field cultivator, #53 plow,'53 HD5B dozer Duct tape.... Can't fix stupidity. Folks, My 2 pennies, As mentioned I have heard pumps making a knocking noise when they go south. Friend had one go bad and was very noisy! one of my 45's pump sounds like a cornsheller. as long as clutch is engaged it knocks, arms go up and down just fine, pump still knocks bad. ---I think you can drop the pto box and see IF the drive gears are ok or missing teeth, then go from there. ------------- http://machinebuildersnetwork.com/ |

I'm currently working on the P.T.O gears on my WD45 and I was missing numerous teeth on the Intermediate gear, a few off the Idler Gear and 1 off the sliding gear and it was more of a knocking and banging when the clutch was released instead of a tick-tick. It was loud enough I was looking for holes in the side of the torque tube after I got it shut down. ------------- WD45 IH Cub Cadet 149,1650,1250 #2 Cart, IH#2 Tiller |
