I am guessing you are talking about the side panels that fit under the gas tank, as in the attached pdf. If not, please post a photo of what you are asking about.

They attach with 1/4" screws around the perimeter, They go from the side of the dash to about the back of the engine on both sides of the tractor. Here is the left side of a D14 with that side panel in place, the 1/4" capscrews are bright finish and show. D17 will be similar.

I take mine off and leave them off . Makes for a nice mouse nest building space. My father took the side covers off both of our D17s. They hung in the shed until the day we moved off the farm .

As Pat says, they are good for looks but invite trouble. I'd hang em on the wall.

Like Jim said 1/4 20 screws . Just cleaned mine with a tap . At least that's the size on my D 15 . If I had side panels I would have them on , but we don't have much of a mice problem down south . Thanks

Just curious what you think of that "legend" battery from NAPA? I purchased my first one this year and have only had it a month.

EPALLIS,
Not to hijack this thread.
I like having the panels on the 17 but if you have to do something in there, they are not quick to remove.
I get almost all my batteries from NAPA, and they work good. Probably a little more expensive??I was having very erratic readings on the amp gage with the old battery. New battery corrected that issue.

 Chris
