| Grand son and I have been fighting this darn thing since 7:30 this AM. Sink would not drain. I took everything under there apart. Nothing plugging up the trap or anywhere else under there. But there was no water standing in pipe going down thru the floor. ???? I went to town and bought all new metal pipe for under the sink along with 1 new sink basket I couldn't find the basket wrenches so I picked up a couple. They turned out to be total crap. Couldn't get the basket nut off so I headed out to the shed, got the little portable air compressor and the air chisel. Made short work of that darn basket nut. I picked up one of those expandable pipe cleaners that goes inside the drain pipe, it expands when you put water to it and water pressure is supposed to blow out the plug. I converted it to use air. I figured 100 + lbs of air would move a plug or blow the darn plastic pipe apart. Darn thing acted like there was no plug. We put everything back together and ran hot water for half an hour. Works great. I still don't know why the darn drain wouldn't work. Anyway I just poured a bottle of drain cleaner down there and ran hot water for another 15 minutes. That was an hour ago. Darn I don't like messing around under sinks. Its past time for glass of iced tea. Grandsons went fishing. |

septic tank or city sewer ? plastic underground lines or steel ? age ? ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

Then expanding cleaners work good but you have to be sure your beyond the takeoff for the vent pipe . Those pour in drain cleaners are kind of voo-doo magic things for unless its let stand in pipe for a length of time they do little . Hot water probably does more . I have a small high pressure pump with a reverse jetting nozzle and you would wonder at what come out of a drain pipe when using it. Also have couple different size power snakes but hardly use them as jetting works to clear everything but roots . ------------- Life lesson: If you’re being chased by a lion, you’re on a horse, to the left of you is a giraffe and on the right is a unicorn, what do you do? I don't like working on kitchen sink drains(just had to replace a strainer that started to leak a couple months ago) but I would rather have a plug there than in the outlet baffle of the septic tank. I had the tank pumped a couple months ago when I noticed fluids building up around the lid. I told the guy it must have plugged the outlet baffle but he was no help. I guess his outfit only pumps them out. A month or so later I have a house guest, so water consumption goes up, and the tank runs over again. I call a different guy and tell them I need it fixed. They come and pump it out, but say they are so far behind on drain field and septic tank work, they'll have to put me on a list. DOHH! So, I go to the hardware store and buy a full length of 1/2 inch conduit. Take it to the local fix it shop and have a U bent in one end so there is about 2 feet of pipe before the U starts. I run a drain snake back thru the conduit and reach the thing down in there to the bottom of the baffle and start snaking out the plug. Didn't work worth a crap and I hit something SOLID, so I thought I was done for. Pulled the snake out of the conduit and hooked a garden hose up and flushed at it for a bit. Then, since I figured it was still plugged, I dug a trench about ten feet long so any overflow would run down the hill to the field and not sit and soak in around the tank cover. Well, it's opened and draining to the drain field now. | Septic system. No its not plugged checked that. Plastic pipe all the way. Sink is the farthest away from the tank. Everything else worked fine. Just this darn sink drain. Everything is hooked to the same line. 2 inch line from the sink back to the laundry room/bathroom where it turns into 4" before the bathroom/ laundry room hookups. 4" plastic to the tank, 2 -45° elbows between the tank and house. Yes it has the proper fall from house to tank. We'll see what happens. Working great now. |

Dang old gal just told me the sink was backing up again. Darn good thing she was joking. I was looking for the #6 shotgun shells for the 12gauge. Was seriously considering pointing it down the sink drain and squeezing off 3 or 4 rounds.

Hmm...do you have a proper vent for the sink ? When was the last time it was cleaned out? You can get a LOT of hair/soap buildup that'll block the sink drain. Maybe get into the weekly habit of filling it up with hot water then pulling the plug. It should go down pretty quick. dang, reminds me the kitchen 'grease trap' has to be pumped out.... next week...it's under the addition and you need to crawl under the deck to get to the addition. I actually make a list of stuff to haul in there...PITA job... Septic tanks and cast iron pipe can be a problem - cast iron seems to grow closed inside especially right at tank entrance . Sch #40 and a sanitary T to replace baffle in last 10 ft of pipe is the answer - did a lot of them when I had the septic business . same as a pipe between 2 tanks that is cast they grow shut also.
