I have a 180 Allis diesel that is giving me some fuel issues. Started surging mildly last summer under no load. Changed fuel filter and bled system. Then started stalling under no load. Would start back up, surge to high RPM, then stall. If sitting for a while will not re-start unless you crack fuel lines again at injector, basically bleeding the system again. Then will sometimes run ok, but seems really slow to respond to throttle movement. What I have done so far: removed screen from sediment bowl, cleaned check valve in return line, fresh fuel, tank and bowl clean, checked all fittings for tightness. What's the next step I should take? Thanks in advance for any advice!

First thing that should have been done:   Remove sediment glass bowl and turn on the valve 100%. There should be TWO STREAMS of fuel gushing from the base. If fuel is drizzling straight down, the sediment bowl base is PLUGGED at the inlet. Remove it and clean it out.

Did you gut the return fitting on top of the injection pump ??

Also pulled inspection/timing cover from side of IP. Fuels runs out, couple very small specks of sediment, etc under cover. I have the top cover off the pump now. Everything coated in a layer of sludge but no floating particles or anything.

I didn't gut the fitting. The ball moves freely but I can blow through the fitting in both directions.

Yeah, I guess it's more like a "varnish". I can scrape it off with my fingernail.

I would still gut the return fitting by grinding lightly on the threaded end and prying out the washer and the glass ball and spring. It's your loss if you don't at least TRY IT.

Yeah I was considering gutting the fitting. I might do it yet but wanted to get some advice first. Does it matter that I can blow through it both ways? What does gutting it accomplish in regards to the symptoms I am having? In other words, why do you recommend gutting it?

In a normal running engine, there is always a certain amount of fuel going out thru that return fitting. If you put your finger over the hole to stop this fuel flow...….the engine DIES. Gut the fitting and see what happens.
