Series one, D17 diesel with the old school , canister type oil filter . What's available to convert it to a spin-on filter? Are new bases for sale anywhere? Thanks, guys.

Takes more than the base, block has to be modified and different oil pump. Search "full flow oiling" on here, there's a few good threads about it in detail.

That is for an early model D17 with a gas engine.  Since yours is a diesel, you would only need to change the base to acommodate a spin on filter.  My question is: what benefit are you hoping to achieve?

The D19G 262 spin on oil filter base would bolt on directly

Yours is bypass system. Don't try using a full flow filter
Reread not a 230 so Bill's advice sounds right.

Sounds like block has been changed some time to the earlier block which used that type filter. No full flow filter for that block.     MAck

I think the AGCO number is PS100501 for the adapter. Not sure on filter number. Using a filter base from a newer D17 or D19 would be my preferred solution.

The bypass system is still a bypass system unless you replumb the oil lines. A spin-on filter would be more convenient, but there wouldn't be enough back pressure and too much oil may get bypassed back to the crankcase.

The diesels did not use the bypass filter. The parts book shows the same oil pump for early and late  engines. Everyone is confusing the gas with the diesel.
The problem with the canister filters is that are difficult to get them to not leak.

We used the filter base for a series 4 D17 on our series 1 and worked fine, uses the same spin on filter as a 190 XT diesel, or a D21.

Ah crap, I just reread this again. You have a completely different situation Tom, the conversion I was thinking applies to gas engines only. As mentioned above, there was an adapter available from AGCO at one time.

The 45 diesel was bypass but the 262's are full flow.

All D17 Diesels are full flow oiling. you can use a spin-on filter base off C,CII gas or diesel and early F gas Gleaner combines or All D17,D19 Diesels, just use the filter that fits that filter base and get the mounting gasket that fits that base, your old base now has two O-rings just use the new gasket and NOT the two O-rings.

Sounds like the block has been changed to a old 6b230 from Co-op, or old Gleaner combine, which used a filer like he is talking about. Even the Co-op D used the bypass filter.    MACK
