Working on the hood panels of my '57 D-14, there appears to be an insulation material on the inner side of one panel. Have any of you who restored a D 14 used anything to replace this?? Does it serve any purpose?? Maybe it's to protect the paint from heat?? Thanks Bob@allisdowneast

AC parts shows a liner and adhesive used on the inside of the left hood for the low clearance (under hood) muffler. So yes it would protect the paint, and likely anyone who happened to touch the hood.

Its likely asbestos, too!

Yes, it is a heat shield to prevent paint/decal damage caused by heat from the exhaust.

Is that material still available? I recall sandblasting the remnants off mine after electrolysis, but did not replace with anything.
I don't work my D 15, but who knows down the road.

Thanks for the tip, Acdiesel. As a follow up, yesterday at about 4:00 pm, I ordered a 6" x 10' piece of heat resistant wet and stick fiberglass fabric (good to 1100 deg. F). Cut to size, soak in water and apply with the adhesive in the cloth. McMaster Carr shipped it from Robbinsville, NJ and at about 12:30 pm today, the brown truck came up the driveway with my order. Must have just made every connection from New Jersey to Central Maine. Took only 20 - 21 hours to get here. Bob@allisdowneast
