After 36 years at the same place it has become a toxic place to work. Pretty much everything is my fault and if I do make a mistake it's blown out of proportion since the boss has a very short fuse. Things as simple as forgetting to add someone to an e-mail. I'm going to have my annual review in a couple of weeks and pretty much know that is going to be ugly. Wife says to quit and retire so I pulled out the calendar this week and said next year on May 15 will be my last day. That's the day before my birthday. But I don't think I will or can last that long. It's a hard thing to walk away after all this time. Please say a prayer or two for me to get through this.

Will do, there probably is worse things to deal with on a daily basis but that has to be near the top. I'll pray that things get better and you get some needed relief. Hang in there but try not to slap anyone!!!

I am sending prayers out for you. I hope you also keep sending a plenty. I’m in a similar boat. We don’t have workman’s comp but we’re being forced to take more and more risks each day. Greed has overcome the boss at this company. He’s started using illegals for most big projects. We have to compete but are held to a much higher standard. I’ve given a lot of thought to opening my business again but I really don’t want that either. I hope you can find a workable solution with happiness in the end.

Stan, I have and will continue to pray for you in this situation. Just a thought, it's not unheard of for some management to deliberately make life miserable so you do quit. I would not be hasty in quitting at this point, you have 9 months, retiring early can cost you a lot. there may some legal protection available for you, you might think about seeking a labor relations lawyer's advice.

Thad....you can contact ICE for your problem! Stan...I hate to say this, but you would prolly be a lot better off quitting. as soon it will affect your health by staying. there are plenty of other less strenuous jobs to take up the slack, you have a retirement program...right? can you collect SS yet? take that as soon as you can, don't hold off for more money, you'll never re-coup the lost money by waiting. in the meantime, i'll also pray for your right decision. good luck buddy...we're all rooting for you!

36 years ??!! yeesh I lasted 11y, 8 m then QUIT as my boss didn't like me... I have NOT had a paycheck since then. I'm assuming you'll get some kind of company pension ? ANYthing is better than the STRESS you're under ! Heck I paid off my house, bought a 2yr old F150, lots of orange and this May bought me a Kubota AND I still have a few coins in the wallet cause NOW I get a fed pension. Not much( member NO job for 30+ yrs) but it does pay the taxes and such.
You'd be surprised how fast your BP calms down NOT going into a STRESSful workplace. You'll also notice that without the daily grind, you don't have to fillup the truck, buy lunches, coffees, or put up with the STRESS of the 'boss'. Get out NOW, while you can and enjoy life. We're only given xx number of days,so cherish the ones you have left ! I could go on and on, but you get my gist. Hand in your 2 week notice on Monday ! If you boss is a jerk, like mine, he'll ask you to pack up by 10 and be gone, and the company will pay you for the 2 weeks.

Stan, Hang in there. I had a similar thing and it took me 2 years to leave after I got a poor review. I did it on my own time. Unless they have been making a case against you for several years, you can probably tuff it out till your ready by jumping through their hoops . Good luck! We are here for you. Regards, Chris

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions and prayers. I do have a pension plan here and have a meeting scheduled next week to discuss getting the heck out of Dodge. Only reason to stay longer is to keep my health insurance as I'm not in my 60's yet and know it can be expensive BUT cheap compared to my health and sanity. This has been the only job I ever had. I went from driving dad's 7045 on the farm to this job when I finished collage. I did look into the COBRA health plan that would cover me for another 18 months and that cost is reasonable. I have started to slowly clean up my office just in case.............it needed it anyway..............I'm sort of a pack rat. Staying here for another 8-9 months in the long run won't make much difference to the bottom line so I think I'm OK with what ever way it goes down.

Hey Stan,,,first of all,,,I feel for you Guy,,,,,I was sorta in the same predicament before I went ahead and took an early retirement from the place I had been at for 31 years. I checked with the Social Security office and am glad I did as the dude there told me to do some extrapolating out on going out at 62 vs going at 65. The difference is in your favor by going out at 62 especially if you are in a situation such as you describe with the Boss Man. Remember,,SS is betting that you die before you reach 65,so,,if you thinkin bout waiting til you're 65,,,remember the guvment is betting AGAINST you. Since you are not in your 60's yet, you still got at least 3 years before you can consider drawing SS unless you was to get hurt,,,,, I'd say hang on there doing the best you can until the Boss Man can't stand it no more,,,and MAKE him turn you loose,,then draw unemployment on him till that runs out ,,then go look for another job more suited to your talents. With that sort of attitude,,you'll be lots more able to put up with his chit than HE will will be able to put up with yours,,,,,

Hey Thad,,,I thought anybody that hires people for wages HAS to provide workman's Comp Insurance for all his employees,,,,?? Some states may be different but I know a contractor that had just 5 employees and one got hurt and he tried to get out of paying the hurt employee's hospital costs,,,He got sued by the state, he lost, had to pay the hospital costs plus back pay and then got accessed a "penalty" on his workman's comp premiums and wound up having to pay that increased penalty for 9 months as long as nobody else got hurt under his employment,,,,,His attitude towards his workers took a dramatic turnaround,,,and he would flat eat the worker's butts out if they did ANYTHING even remotely dangerous,,,just an amazing turnaround,,,!!! I knew this contractor very well,,,,,,

So far as I know, Arkansas is the only state that has a workman’s comp waiver. We pay $50.00 every other year to wave our workman’s comp. we’re all private contractors. We pay all our own taxes/1099 labor. We’re told what to wear HCI shirts and hats. We’re given 2 or 3 a year and pay for the rest ourselves. I have to be very careful in how I handle my problem. My boss is my nephew/step nephew and will own all our family land one day except our 5 acres and 5 I bought across the road. So I also have stock holders. I may take some pics tomorrow to show some of what we’re asked to do. I have a small crew . They’re all younger and lighter than I but I always take the high work and heavy lifting. I wouldn’t dream of asking these guys to do some of this. I treat my guys well. I buy lunch often and take them shooting often. They also treat me well in return. They are just a number to the boss. To me they are like family.

If you are old enough for someone to send you a check once a month take it! You can always find supplement work and enjoy it! Sounds like to me your boss is trying to get you to quit probably so he can hire someone cheaper. 9 months of hell is not worth shortening your life!

Seems for years that battle waged within my mind also - should i quit the full time job and do the excavating full time , should i find another job . Well after one slowdown and layoffs at about 28 years, I became foreman on 2nd shift - the several individuals who had made sometimes Hell for me all of a sudden worked under me (Revenge Time) Nope treat others like you want to be treated , with respect . Seems from there I got the job as Plant foreman and Then Maintenance Supervisor for building - made it 39 1/2 years when company sold out and closed . have to say Roxann was supportive - saying it's your decision but think it through as we can do this together, whatever you decide . ( Great to have a wife that supports you but also lets you think it through) Problem is these decisions should have been made way back of what the future should be - seems for years I did not trust in myself to move forward or directed my abilities wrongly . Seems I should have done the college at 30 rather than at 60 and changed jobs back then .

From the movie "Rudy" Hey, hey, hey, hey, whats ya doing here? Don't you have practices?
Not any more, I quit.
Oh, since when are you the quitting kind?
I don't know. I just don't see the point anymore.
So you didn't make the dress list, there are greater tragedies in the world.
I wanted to run out of that tunnel for my dad. To prove to everyone-----.
Prove what?
That I was somebody.
Oh you are so full of crap. You're five feet nothing. One hundred and nothing and hardy a speck of athletic ability, and you hung in with the best collage football team in the land for two years. And your also going to walk out of here with a degree from the University of Notre Dame. In this lifetime you don't have to prove nothing to nobody except yourself. And after what you have gone through, if you haven't done that by now, it ain't going to never to happen. Now go on back.
Sorry I never got you to see your first game here.
Heck, I seen to many games in this stadium.
But you said you never saw -----.
I've never seen a game from the stands.
You were a player?
I road the bench for two years. Thought I wasn't being played because of my color. I got filled with a lot of attitude, so I quit. Still not a week goes by I don't regret it. And I guarantee a week won't go by in your life you won't regret walking out letting them get the best of you. Do you here me clear enough?
I know this doesn't help at all with your job, with your life. But there is something a to be said about walking away and quitting so close to the end.
Stay the coarse and fight. Fight with all you have left. Fight for all you have done. Fight until the last breath. Maybe they carry you out on your shield, or maybe you walk out of the tunnel and into the sunset. Then you kiss the girl and the two of you get into your new Corvette and lay posi marks out of the parking lot.
Ya, that's how I see it.

You are a slab of meat anymore where you work. Insurance is out of control. Figure out a way to get out of there. Your years of doing a good job for them doesn't mean a thing to them anymore. They are trying to make it miserable for you so you will quit.

Prayers to you Stan, you don't owe anything to anyone but yourself in this situation. you said there is other things to consider about the land etc, but what we may not realize is that at the end of every pay period, and we have been paid. nothing is OWED by the employer or the employee.

Stan, back pain forced me to sell my tire shop and I took a job as the credit manager for the oldest buy here pay here car lot in Iowa. It took me 6 months to learn the state regs and rules. I spent 11 years there, I should a quit 2 years sooner. The boss and co workers were the greatest. I have owned 2 different businesses and have never seen customers like those. A lot of them would do anything to cheat the dealer, and I had to deal with them. It was nice drawing SSI and a pay check too. But in the end I'm glad I am not there. It is nice to stop in and shoot the breeze once in a while.

Thanks folks for all the sage advise. Wife said to take a year off and then decide if I want to stay retired or find another job. I guess the unknown of what to do and what will happen down the road is making me a nervous ninny so a leap of faith is going to be needed. What's that saying? "just do it".

Stan, can relate, was getting tired of the politics, the youth being disrespectful of what I 'Knew' that they could not or would not try to understand, then got really old, body started letting me down and I went out on sick leave getting a few items worked on where a few repairs actually worked. Thought I could go back and finish out another year or two, make a little more money but that political BS came up and reared its ugly head, I said ENOUGH. I retired last July, have NOT regretted it so far save getting bored and DID take up a boredom chaser job for now. The position is becoming a bit draining, the owner wants a full time driver where I signed on for part time ONLY. He is always trying to snitch a tad bit more run time that I do not care to release so may just back away yet again and REALLY retire.
There is a certain level of self satisfaction in knowing I do not 'HAVE TO' got to work for a living anymore.

Slowly getting better now that I have made the decision. Now just need to get through the next three weeks as the boss won't be back for another week and I will then give my two week notice.
