We have two A/C systems for our house, and both are 26 years old (I think we've been lucky). They have been trouble free all those years. The outside condensers are Trane, and they are identical units (consecutive serial numbers in fact). The problem now is one condenser makes an awful racket when the fan shuts off. It starts up perfect and runs great, just purrs and barely makes any noise, until it shuts off. Then it makes a racket like you threw a large tree branch into the rotating fan. At times when I've been out in the yard and heard it make the noise, it's made me cringe. The other condenser runs just as it should, and when it shuts off, it does so quietly. I've looked at the problem condenser, and nothing appears loose or out of the ordinary. It's nice to have an identical unit to compare it to, but so far it hasn't helped find the problem. Any ideas? Thanks

Ditto what ole Shameless says,,,must be the change of motor RPM that indicates a bearing in motor or fan,,,,

don't know how a 'bad bearing' could create the noise but... perhaps a fan blade has lost a rivet or two ? Saw a post here about a tractor losing part of a blade ($$$ to the rad !!) Whern inspecting be SURE to power off the units !! Pull the disconnects next to them. You don't want one of them powering up when you're in them. If you can get your mitts on the fan like unscrewing a shield, I would go hands on and rotate and shake the blades around to check them and look for a bad bearing. circuit breaker off of course. |

| Check out the fan blade. I have seen some where the pressed in hub gets loose and the fan starts slipping. Sometime it gets so bad the motor no longer turns the fan. They make all kind of wired sounds then. You can pull the top off the AC and check the bearing for play. You can buy a new condenser motor and replace it fairly easy and reasonable your self if needed. |

| I'll check that out this evening. I figured if it were a bearing, it would make some kind of noise all the time, but it just starts up and purrs real quiet when running. Only when it shuts off that things go "Bang!" |

I'll check this all out. See you soon, Ted! Hopefully the A/C doesn't crater...it was 112 degrees yesterday, and will be hot again today. I'm ready for a little northern escape!

I've had grinders and other motors get obviously louder when shutting down that turned out to be bad bearings,,,then again,,I've had em be rattling while running so take your pick,,, By the way,,,,,Good Luck, Creston

| Well I didn't get to it today. I had another project staining a deck/porch and that took longer than I thought it would. It is next on the list of things to repair around here, though. Have something scheduled at my grandparents' place the next couple days, so may be Monday before I can get to it. |

| grab an old 190XT fan, mount it on a pulley, run one of them long belts off the back of your 66 combine, puts it on an electric motor off to the side, can make a belt tightener outta yer ferd tractor! |

Pull the disconnect remove the cover from the side follow the fan wires and unplug one wire secure it so it won't touch now put disconnect back in and let it start and run a couple min then turn off this will tell you if noise is fan or compressor ------------- You can wash the dirt off the body but you can’t wash the farmer out of the heart and soul |

Did this this evening. I'm thinking it's in the compressor now. When turned off, it shook a little and made the noise. I don't know much about A/C, so I may just need to get a pro in to swap it out. I'm guessing they have to "catch" all the old Freon when unhooking the compressor. |

If it's R22 it's not worth putting a compressor in it we charge $100 per pound for 22 roughley ,700$ for ref 4-6 hrs at 100$ per hr and cost of compressor and not much in warranty if it's just noise letter run and start saving up for replacement of the system ------------- You can wash the dirt off the body but you can’t wash the farmer out of the heart and soul |
