I have a 1953 WD gas tractor. It recently developed a problem when run anything above idle. It starts fine and idles normally. When you are out of gear sitting still and open the throttle it will run smoothly for about 30 seconds and then starts to stutter and will nearly shut off if you do not put it back to idle. It also does the same thing under while in gear under a load. I use it to bush hog and when you start it does exactly the same thing I described above. It will go fine for a few seconds and then stutters bad, almost stalls and nearly dies until you bring it back to idle speed. I have checked the carb and all seems fine with it. Further the fuel line and filter are fine. Does anyone know what the problem may be? A friend told me it might be the coil or an ignition issue. All spark plug wires, plugs and points were redone last year.

Idk. If it was me i'd pull a plug and turn it over to see how good the spark is. If the spark is good, check the main jet in the carb.... Thats just kind of a stab in the dark though

There are some ignition elements (coil in particular) that are heat sensitive - though it usually takes a lot longer for heat to affect them. My guess is that some junk got in the fuel tank or that your float valve is sticking and that your tractor is starving for fuel at higher rpm - you have enough in the carb to start and run a bit or at idle before the partial blockage starves it. Check your fuel flow into the carb - if weak, there's something partially blocking fuel getting from the tank to your carb. If ok then pull the drain at the bottom of the carb to see if you are getting a solid, strong stream of gas. If not, check the float valve. HTH

I bet it's a fuel problem. Open the carb drain and see if you get a strong flow for a few minutes. Sediment bulb screen plugged or something in the tank I'm thinking.

Periodically, on my WD, the inlet to the sediment bowl (inside the fuel tank) gets clogged with rust and sediment. Remove it from the tank and cleaning takes about 5 minutes. FWIW.

SOUNDS TO ME LIKE THE SCREEN THAT IS IN THE INLET TO THE CARBURETOR THAT MOST PEOPLE FORGET ABOUT. IT IS ATTACHED TO THE ELBOW THAT SCREWS INTO THE CARBURETOR AND THE OTHER END IS SCREWED ONTO THE FUEL LINE.

WD's had no filter and don't need a filter if the screen and sediment bowl is in place. Add on car filters made for filtering pumped fuel can cause restrictions in fuel flow. Throw away the rubber hose and filter and put it back the way it came, with a steel line from the sediment bowl to the carb. Then, take the drain plug out of the carb bowl and see if you have a full flow.
