Hey guys. Dad has a 2006 ford f150 with the 4.6 liter V8. It has developed a miss. Plugged my scan tool into it. Said i have a number one cylinder miss. Also had a code for coil problem either primary or secondary circuit. P0135

I guess what id liked to know is did this motor use that poor plug that would break in the head. I've gotten conflicting answers. And last is on this coil removal. It looks like I've got to remove the fuel rail. Can that be?

The coil will come out without removing fuel rail

Maybe unplug/plug connector to the #1 coil a few times, reset puter, take for test drive.....

As for plugs, I had my mechanic replace all 8 at 100,000KM cause I saw youtube videos of the HORROR of changing plugs. Better he have it in HIS garage, if HE busts one ! All went well BUT there's a local guy who goes from shop to shop doing plug work ! Nother guy does manifold bolts !

Have a good running 03 , 4.6 , 180,000KM ( 100,000 miles ?) going to scrappers in a month. Sadly not worth pulling the engine..too bad you weren't closer.

Anything is possible but I haven't seen the 2006 engines break the spark plug. Remove coil and blow compressed air around spark plug to blow any dirt and debris out of the hole before removing spark plug. You could probably replace the coil to fix the skip but I always replace the plug when I replace a coil. Make sure you get the right plug for that engine.

My son had 1. He was always replacing coils. New ones didn't last so he would buy 3 or 4 coils at a time from the salvage lot a couple of miles down the road. He was always replacing them. Good luck

The plug breakage was on the larger 5.4 motor V8.......... in the 2006- 2007 era.. The 4.6 motor used a one piece plug. Never heard of one breaking....... You should be able to get the coil out without removing the fuel rail.. some are TIGHT , but I have not had to remove a rail yet.......... Coil failures are normally P0301- 302- 303 ... etc ... it is acutall not a "coil" failure, it is a "missifre" and can actually be a plugged fuel injector or coil.... If you get the "other coil code".. I think maybe P0351, 352, etc .. that normally means the INPUT side to the coil ( elect plug / wires / etc) not making good contact ............pull the elect plug, clean , look at contact pins, spray clean, etc.

the P0135 means the passenger side O2 sensor is acting up... possibly the result of misfire / excess fuel in the exhaust.

FIRST thing I would do is determine what misfire code you have... don't change the plugs unless your over 80,000 miles on them... change the coil and see if that helps, or injector if coil is OK............. sometimes guys switch the #1 and #2 coils and see if the code moves to the new cylinder... if NOT, then problem is not the coil, but coil electrical plug /or injector /or injector electrical plug.

Steve, your correct on your code correction. But i typed it wrong 351 is what I have not 135. My code was for coil problem.

I have a 2000 V10, same engine, just two more cylinders. I had similar issue/code many times. always the coil. I got to carrying a coil and the tools to replace in the truck. Originally I couldn't buy the plug boot, it was a molded part of the coil. later I discovered NAPA sold them separately. I discovered that many times, it was the plug boot, and not the coil that was the problem
