Oil is leaking from the left side ( opposite side of lever ) where the shaft comes through the housing. I think there must be an O ring on the shaft. My question is can I remove the hand lever, push the rod through enough to replace the O ring? If that is not doable or I am wrong about the O ring what do I need to do? thanks in advance

Yes, it can be done.Have to remove the side plate. Have to loosen the set screws on fork. Be careful to not drop keys from fork. HTH Tracy

Well I am gonna edit this post and say refer to Mack's info further down this thread. He says you can on a 170..... and I would believe him over most on this forum. No disrespect to any others but Mack is the info MAN !!!!!
My info below would be pertinent to D17's
Its not that simple.
Gotta pull right side plate to access PD area. Then there is a set screw that goes up thru the shifter fork and into the shaft.  The set screw is similar to the one in the leaver on the outside. Even after removing the set screw there is a large key that lays in the shaft on the lefts side and engages with the shifter fork that will keep the shaft from coming out the left side.

So to answer your question It may be possible to push the shaft out the left side to replace the "O" ring  but you will still have to go through all the same steps as if you are removing the shaft from the right side. The key has to be removed from the shaft as the shaft is moved to the right and is positioned kinda of under the center of the PD. I guess at that point you could push it back to the left and out the left side.

I have replaced many of those seals but have always pulled the shaft out the right side and de-burred the shaft housing and shifter fork. The shifter fork is always razor sharp around the shaft. Not sure how the factory ever got an "O" ring thru the shifter fork without cutting them.

This will also give you an opportunity to inspect for worn parts.

It also helps if you have someone with small hands to help you, especially when going back together.

Give yourself about 2 1/2 to 3 hours for the job.

Hey Tracy
Can you leave the Key in and push the shaft out the left side far enough to replace "O" ring ?
I though it had to be removed .

I always went thru side cover. Loosened set screws and slid the shaft to the right side. You can replace the oring thru opening or the hole itself. You can do both sides by removing lever. Do one side at a time. Never completely pull shaft from fork, helps if you have a helper. Piece of cake compared to the steering clutches on my HD4!

Hey Tracy
Thanks Good to know info.  Learn something new every day. You must have extremely small talented hands if you can do it thru the side cover.  Do you think that when these tractors were manufactured they put the "O" ring on as you stated.
And yes I always replace both sides while I am doing the job.

Just received 6 new "O" rings from Sandy Lake last week as I have several tractors that need that repair. FYI that is also the same "O" ring on the independent PTO shaft on a D10/D12.

The O-rings can be replaced just by sliding the shaft.  HOWEVER, the side cover must be removed to ensure the 2 dogs do not fall out of the shaft inside.  Having the hand clutch in low range keeps the dogs on top of the shaft, but they can still fall out easily when sliding the shaft each way.  Remember to replace the O ring on both sides!

170 don't have a set screw inside, just a snap ring on left side. Keys won't fall out if you only go enough on each side to expose oring.   MACK

Ok thanks guys for your thoughts looks like you are figuring it out but now  I am confused, how do I replace the O rings? Can I do what I thought might work remove the cover, remove snap ring, washer, and high low lever and slide left just enough to replace the O ring? Do I still need to remove the side plate in order to get my hand up in there for something to do with the forks? Thanks

Remove the hand lever setscrew. Work the hand lever fore and aft until you get it loosened up to be able to slide it off of the shaft. Use penetrating oil and pull it back farther than low range really is to help loosen it.  Position the shaft so the clutch is in LOW RANGE before removing the hand lever. Once the hand lever is off, remove the left side heat shield, and then the snap ring and washers from the shaft. Have someone gently tap on the end of the shaft while you watch the left side. When the Oring is just barely exposed, dig it out and throw it away. Roll on a new Oring with lots of oil. Tap things back together or go in a little deeper to do the Oring on the right side. As long as you go no farther than needed, the internal keys will not fall out, especially when the clutch is in LOW RANGE.
