I have a 1940 B. Someone shoved a piece of pipe in the manifold...it looks crumby and is a lil loose in the manifold. Its my mowing rig and id just as soon not have it bellaring at me for hours. I see that there were above the hood mufflers...below the hood....and some came w just a straight pipe. How do i tell what i would of had so i can bring it back to origonal? Thanks. |

| In all the factory photos I've seen, I've seen under the hood mufflers. That is probably factory correct, but I prefer the taller pipe as the fumes don't blow back in your face as bad. |

| I could bee wrong, but doesn't the above the hood type have a small hole in the hood, and the thru hood has a larger hole to accommodate the large part of the muffler. Creston is right about the longer muffler, but if you mow a lot under trees you're going to hang more limbs. |

I tap all of these manifolds with a 1 1/4" pipe tap and slide a short muffler over the pipe nipple. The Ford 8 N under belly muffler is the shortest I have found that slides over.

on some tractors the hood has like a 3 inch diameter hole and the muffler is 4 inches in diameter... I have used a short tail pipe with a muffler on it to get above the hood. Couple of mine have the water pipe extension like Dick shows. ... couple just have the exhaust pipe stuck into the manifold with the bolt retainer. ------------- Like them all, but love the "B"s. |

To be correct the original B's - my favorite - came through with an under the hood muffler. I still remember the fumes in my face when I drove them. Around the end of the B's run the taller muffler was used. Frankly, I would prefer the taller muffler. Listen closely to what is said above by some of the best mechanics I know as to what type of muffler to install. Take good care of my favorite. Good Luck! Bill Long

My parts book states that the B used a straight pipe up to engine serial# BE43896 and IB up to serial # B2398. The under hood muffler was used up to B114400 (1950) and IB55301.
