Hi guys-I picked up a 190 over the weekend that is in a basket.

I was looking at the head and it appears to have cracks in the vicinity of the spark plug pocket to the valve seat areas.

Are these heads prone to cracking?   Are they typically repairable?

Also, a quick check showed that it was out of flat by 0.009.   Is that typical too?

I have it at a cylinder head shop so I will have to wait and see what the magnflux results are.

Thanks in advance for the help,
Terry

The universal answer to all questions is yes, how much do you want to spend?

Not too many gassers around but I never heard of any kind of head problems. Broken pistons in the early models, yes, and the early models used a Holley carb which is supposedly junk. Dad had an XT with 301 gas and other than it just plain wore out he never had issues with it. It was a great starting tractor in the winter time.

Thanks guys...I think I have another head that I will try instead of fixing this one.    And...once running I will watch to see if I have a cooling problem for some reason.
