Well finally heard from the engine rebuilder. The #4 exhaust valve seat broke loose and fell into the cylinder. Thats the good news; the bad news is that there are cracks that go into the fire ring area, into the injector ports (some have been pinned by a previous owner), and the head shows signs of rust (water leaking into the cylinder). They will be pressure testing the head to determine if any of the cracks are leaking antifreeze (and extent of repairs needed...or if it is junk). Since the engine started and ran good before the valve seat let loose, I am prone to reusing the head should it pass the pressure test and it does not cost an arm and leg to fix it up.

In the meantime, I am looking for a good head for and early model D17D (262 diesel). PM me with location and cost as I am in No Central Mn. Sure am hoping that the problem can be fixed within my budget as I really do not want to turn it into a donor tractor.

Whew. Engine rebuilder did presssure test and none of the cracks go into the coolant passages. The head is rebuidable, altho they advised that they cannot say if, or how long before the cracks progress to the point they cannot be repaired.

Most of those machine shop guys like to preach doom and gloom. They are kind of forced by todays buisness environment to always give you the worst possible scenario so it covers their rear.

i would bet that9 out of 10 45-d heads have cracks thru the nozzle port,quite common.my one 45-d had 3 cracks in the nozzle ports.no leaks and when i put it back together it ran like a new one.best to leave them alone...
